Subject: Steel Soldier- rock band

Written By: MetalManiac on 07/20/05 at 5:58 pm

Anybody  know of or remember this band?  Not sure when exactly they were around, I'm guessing mid to late 80's. They were on a metal compilation video I got and did this song Heroes. They weren't metal....least this song isn't but I like the song and had always hoped to find something more on them but never did.

The song is pretty straight forward, no-frills rock. The band was 3 or 4 guys and in the video they had their faces painted to look like a skull. Not sure if they did this all the time or not.

Anybody know of them? Considering web searches have turned up nothing, I'm wondering if they were friends of someone involved with the video and that's how they got on it.

Can anybody help?

If I can get the video transferred to DVD I can take a screen capture of what they looked like. NOTHING like Kiss...they weren't that dynamic or flashy. The song dealt with either the soldiers who fought in the Vietnam or Persian Gulf war which is what the skull face paint represented. Think you might like them if you liked Tesla's 5 Man Acoustical Jam.

Let me know if you find anything out...really appreciate it! If their other songs are anything like Heroes, I have to have it!

Rock on Smurfette  ;)

Are you 100% positive that's the correct band name?

I've found the best resources on the Net for older metal bands are:

www.bnrmetal.com - The BNR Metal Pages

and

www.metalmayhem.com - Metal Mayhem.Com (he's a label and seller of all things oldschool metal, but click on the "collection" button to see his personal collection of metal cd's. It's insane.)

Rock rock.

Hey Rob,

Thanks for the links to those two sites. Those were cool!

To the best of my knowledge, Steel Soldier is what they called themselves, at least on that video. The fact there's absolutely NOTHING I can find on line about them leads me to believe they had friends that were producing that tape and they got on it that way, probably in hopes of having a label see and sign them. But that's kinda crazy because Crimson Glory was on it with their vid for Lonely which is why I bought it in the first place. I can't remember the other two or three bands that were also included.

Will keep on looking, this sort of is a misson for me now LOL!

OK, I got the video. It's called UNDERGROUND USA music magazine Heavy Metal (I guess they did other genres in the series?) Vol 15

Bands listed in order of appearance:  Precious Metal, Crimson Glory, Mud Honey, Bang Tango, Muffy Panics, Steel Soldier

No info is given about the labels the bands were on. Says Hosted By Underground Bob and Z.J. Winn. It looks like 2 buddies who taped this in their basement. Exec Producer Peter Farkas A Film by Alan Calzatti and Don Ellwell...running time 30 minutes.

That's all the info I have. I also scanned the photo of Steel Soldier off the back of the sleeve. It's not a great picture, hard to really make them out but you get the idea.

Dude, I have no idea if this ancient thread is still active. I'm replying just in case, for the sake of anyone else who wanders by.

Steel Soldier was indeed their name. They were a local Detroit-area glam metal band in the mid-to-late '80s. They were known (and I use that term very generously) for two things: their skull-makeup gimmick (I think the schtick was that they were supposed to be Vietnam casualties back from the dead) and their band logo, which was stenciled on walls ALL OVER southeast Michigan and stayed there long after the band was over. I never saw them. I just know they were part of a trend of extreme Kiss-style dress-up glam bands in the area. (It is Detroit Rock City, after all.) Other bands from that scene included Illegal (who had sirens on the drum kit and dressed like cops), Halloween, who are apparently still around: www.halloweentheband.us/www.halloweentheband.us/, and Seduce, who were featured in "The Decline of Western Civilization, Part 2".

I know that around 1990, Steel Soldier had a big "Leaving for L.A." party, suggesting they were going to go out there and make it big. According to a guy I knew who lived out there, the band lived with their girlfriends on the floor of a practice space for about six months, then returned to Detroit for their triumphant "Welcome Home" show.

Wow, just found more information on Steel Prophet here: http://www.motorcityrock.com/bands/steel_soldier/steel_soldier.html

I can remember seeing the video of the band on TV somewhat around 1990, but I couldn't remember their name, so I always thought that the video has been by Steel Prophet, but Steel Prophet didn't wear masks!!

Now, that I've found more information on Steel Soldier, I need more like the video on DVD and their demo. Can anybody help me!!

Thanks!!

Carsten
