Subject: 80's mp3s

Written By: Acidpiss on 07/25/05 at 6:51 pm

I'm beginning to believe I just may have the best damn library of 80's mp3s ever.  ;)

However, in an attempt to fill in any gaps I may have in my collection, I'm asking everyone here to suggest a song or two that borders maybe on the "rarer" or "not chart-topping" I may have missed.

Fire away, guys.

Taking a stab here but how about Script For A Jester's Tear  or Chelsea Monday by Marillion. I still get chills when I listen to that.

I've never heard anything by Marillion before. At least I'm fairly sure I haven't. I downloaded "Kayleigh" because it seemed to be the most popular song. Listened to it, and I can honestly say that I've never heard that song before in my life.

I should clarify what I'm looking for as far as suggestions go.

I'm looking for stuff that might've been top 40, but down around number 37 or so. Maybe even top 50-ish songs qualify. Stuff that
you might've heard a little during the decade between constant airings of "We Built This City" and "Addicted To Love". Not really looking for obscure songs that I definitely don't know.

Thanks for the suggestions, though. Keep 'em coming!

OK here's some slightly less popular pop songs from the 80s. Not exactly the most obscure & i do remember seeing the video clips to almost every one of these songs in the 80s. I think most of these songs bearly even made it into the top 40 charts, so i hope this helps. I hate pop music & avoid it like the plague so this is the best i could  come up with for now.
*Billy Idol - Fatal Charm
*INXS - Just Keep Walking
*John Farnaham - Break The Ice
*Psuedo Echo - His Eyes
*Europe - Rock The Night
*Devo - That's Good
*Dramarama - Anything Anything
*The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary, Rain, Wildflower, Love Removal Machine, Fire Woman
*The Cure - Just Like Heaven
*The Smiths - How Soon Is Now, This Charming Man
*Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It,  I Wanna Rock
*Dokken - Dream Warriors
*Poison - Nothin But A Good Time,  Your Mamma Don't Dance
*Def Leopard - Action Not Words

Ktelqueen's got the right idea.

I had almost all of those already. There were 3 I didn't have. Oh, and I think "Rumors" was by Club Noveau and not Cameo.
Send me some more if you think of any more.

Ultra, those still seem a little obscure for me. Thanks for the help though!

Cafe, some of those are songs I don't know by artists I do know. I may check them out. The rest were kinda obvious. Thanks as well, though!

BJ and Ceramics:

Apologies if the Net handle offends. I've used it for years now. It's based on something the singer for one of my favorite metal bands said once.

Modern Day Delilah - This is the second time I've downloaded this song. I don't remember it from the 80s and I don't like it. It's too generic for me.

When Your Heart Is Weak - I've never heard this song before either. I've also never heard of the band before.

Lunatic Fringe - I already have on the Vision Quest soundtrack cd. When I was a kid I thought it was a Pink Floyd song. :)

My Oh My - The only Slade tunes I know are Run Runaway and Cum On Feel The Noise (which was made more popular by Quiet Riot). I am also familiar with, but have not heard, Goodbye T'Jane because I believe either Faster Pussycat or L.A. Guns covered it. Dowloaded My Oh My. I've never heard this song before.

Feel The Heat - from the Cobra soundtrack? Hmmm... it's an okay song. Barely remember it from the movie.

Der Kommisar - I already have two versions of this song. Falco and After The Fire. No more. Please, dear God. No more.

Couldn't find anything on Face To Face.

The only "Back To Zero" I could find was the Rolling Stones.

No worries though the thought is horrendous.  Ran accross another Net handle somewhere in here, maybe you all could meet, hers was "Sandinmyvaj..." :o

Hi there...

I've taken a leaf out of ultraviolet's book (I'll give it back later!) and listed a handful of 'nearly' hits from '80-'82...my formative years!

"Nearly' hits in the UK, that is...

1980
Just Can't Give You Up - Mystic Merlin (equal parts disco and jazz-funk music)

I Like (What You're Doing To Me) - Young & Co (equal parts disco and 'club' music)

747 (Strangers In The Night) - Saxon (stormer from one of the first NWOBHM acts)

Private Life - Grace Jones (eerily cool Chrissie Hynde song sung by an eerily cool lady...)

A Walk In The Park - Nick Straker Band (obligatory OHW with pop/dance cross)

1981
Mind Of A Toy - Visage (spooky 'electro-bop' affair)

It's Going To Happen - Undertones (superb guitar-driven pop)

Will You - Hazel O'Connor (actually a top-tenner, but I had to include it...one helluva amazing sax solo, which swallows up most of the record...)

You'll Never Know - Hi Gloss (superbly slick pop/soul...)

That's Entertainment - Jam (amazing acoustic number...charted only as an imported single...)

1982
Senses Working Overtime - XTC (fantastic piece of songwriting...)

Party Fears Two - Associates (mind-blowing voice of the tragic Billy McKenzie...)

State Of Independence - Donna Summer (with an assembled backing choir of 'thousands', Donna sings Jon & Vangelis and gets away with it...)

You're The One For Me - D-Train ('club' music really got going with this, a soul-boy favourite even to this day...)

Nobody's Fool - Haircut 100 (normally overlooked, this is 101% pop, pure and simple...)

Hope some of that helps...

I have lots of songs by Peter Schilling that range in the 100's and they are all from the 80's, 90's and 2000's and some are remixes

I have mp3's by German pop singer Sandra who is really not known well in America, but is well known in Europe

I have many songs by The Cure, Thomas Dolby, Falco and Tears For Fears!

I have some Hit-mixes of some NDW songs (NDW is the German version of 80's new wave)

I've been collecting 70s and 80s mp3s for a few years now and have a decent sized collection. You can view mylist at http://atari.vg-network.com/mp3s.txt.

There are some 60s, 70s, and even 90s mp3s mixed in, but most are from the 80s. There are a lot of more popular 80s mp3s missing, I know. But this collection is of songs that I really liked back then, and there are quite a few obscure ones there. Hope this helps!
