Just ONE? I can't do it.
If I had to pick only one it would be King Diamond. He is in a class unto himself...I worship the guy-he has respect from me like no other. The man is the be-all, end-all for me. Always have, always will worship him but loved too many other metal bands of the 80's. In no particular order and certainly not an exhaustive list....
Warlock, WASP, Savatage, Lita Ford, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metal Church, Testament, Queensryche, Exciter, Witchfynde, Metallica, Annihilator, Crimson Glory, Ministry (industrial metal? Al is aggressive so I count him), Fates Warning, Hellion....you gotta give Ann Boylin her due...great voice on her! Omen, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Warlord, Great White, AD/DC, Def Leppard, Ozzy, Megadeth, Guns & Roses, Tesla (both hard rock)......I need another Johnny Walker....this is taking me WAY back...

i'd have to go with Whitesnake. but the best band to put on a live show was and still is Poison.

Technically "metal" could mean anywhere from Poison to Pantera, so I'm gonna pick a few (besides, one is too hard!):
Male: Bon Jovi, Ozzy, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Skid Row
Female: Vixen, Lita Ford, Girlschool --- and, maybe not "metal" in the strictest sense, but Pat Benatar and 80s Heart.
Overall if I only did go with one, it would be Bon Jovi, since they're the first I ever heard. Today it might be a stretch to call it "metal" (even then, to certain people it would be) but it did introduce me to the genre. :)
