Sisters of Mercy: Flood I, Neverland
Wang Chung: To Live and Die in LA
The Fixx: Outside, Stand or Fall
Cyberaktiv: Nothing Stays
Camouflage: That Smiling Face
Depeche Mode: Blasphemous Rumors, Stripped
David and David: Boomtown

I can't remember the year so it may be a 90s song -

The Cars - Drive

It tears me up.

As I said on another thread:

Faithfully-Journey. I can't listen to that without crying. (But that has to do with personal reasons, too)
This Used to be my Playground-Madonna
I'll Remember-Madonna
Memory-from Cats (I think that came out in the 80s)

Actually, I can't listen to any of these songs without crying.

Oh gosh, I had forgotten about Sesame Street/Muppet Show songs.

Ok, if we're going there, I gotta add a song from "The Muppet Movie" sung by Gonzo called "I'm going to go back there someday."  So sad.  :\'(

True, Rainbow Connection was sad too, although "I'm going to go back there someday" was much sadder to me for some reason.

Speaking of movie soundtracks (I know, I know, we *weren't*) a song from the movie, Oliver, called "Where is love?" gosh, make me sad, so sad.  And the little boy they got singing it, such a sad little thing, I'm getting all misty eyed just thinking about it.

A lot of the soundtrack to "A Chorus Line" is sad too, "What I did for love", "At the ballet", and "Nothing".  (OK, I'm probably getting way off track of the original topic, Bad Bookmistress! Bad!)

Like I put in another topic ("Saddest songs of the 80s") with a few additions:

Suddenly - Billy Ocean
How am I Supposed to Live Without You - Laura Branigan
Didn't We Almost Have it all - Whitney Houston
Separate Lives, and "Another Day in Paradise" - Phil Collins
I Won't Hold You Back - Toto
Think of Laura - Christopher Cross
Waiting for a Girl Like You - Foreigner
True - Spandau Ballet
Can't We Try - Dan Hill & Vonda Shepherd
Living Years - Mike & the Mechanics
Friends and Lovers - Carl Anderson & Gloria Loring
Time for Change - Motley Crue (a bit harder than the rest, but still does)
I'll Get By - Eddie Money
On My Own - Patti Labelle & Michael McDonald

BTW, it seems alot of emotional (to me at least) songs are duets. ;)

"Ain't there one damn song that can make me break down and cry" David Bowie, Young Americans.

I'm not sure they'd fit into the theme of your CD but there are two songs that shredded me for years, but not because of the subject matter. It would help if I started with the background:

As a new member I should introduce myself: my name's Mark and I'm a mid-40s Englishman and a long-standing fan of The Who. On 2 September 1978 I bought the Who's new album, Who Are You, and listened to it every day for the next few days. The following Thursday I had to go out, having listened to all except two of the songs. While I was out at my uncle's house, my mum phoned to break the news to me that Keith Moon had died. When I got home I listened to the last two songs - "Love is Coming Down" and "Who Are You" while feeling very very upset. For years those songs nearly brought tears to my eyes.

Actually, "Love is Coming Down" might fit nicely on your CD - it is a sad song, even though that's not the reason it made me sad.

I do agree with you about "What I did for Love" and "At the Ballet" (love the entire soundtrack) but it came out in 70s and Oliver in the 60s. (I think) Cats and Les Miz came out in the 80s which have a lot of sad songs. I find myself bawling my eyes out when I listen to the soundtracks (and when I watch the tapes I have of both of these).

Yeah, you are probably right about when they came out, I guess I just associate them with when *I* first saw them, which would have been the 80s.  Isn't it amazing how some movies/soundtracks hold up well after so many years?  Yeah, there *is* one song from Les Mis that brought on the sniffles (I SWEAR, I don't *think* I cry that easily  :-\\  )  "Empty chairs at empty tables" and "I dreamed a dream"

That gay song by I think it was Dan Fogelberg Another Auld Lang Syne (sp) ??  ???

Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" ?

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve
She didnt recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried

One More Night by Sandra

The song's kinda sad because in the song the woman's lover has just left her for someone else and she just wants one more night with him because she loves him alot. The woman also tells him that even though he's found someone else, she'll still love him.

Here I stand

Another one that I always found rather sad was the 1991 hit 'Slowly Slipping Away' by Harem Scarem.  Used to be one of my faves back in the day, but until recent times, I never knew what it was called.  I just always knew that whenever I heard it, it always thought it had a sad feel to it.

"I feel it in the morning.  I feel it all through the day.  I feel the heartache, slowly slipping away"

AMAZING GRACE reminds me of my brother's funeral, so when I hear it, kind heart wrenching....when a sister dragged me to a Drifter's oldies concert, I surprised myself by crying uncontrollably when they sang "I've still got some sand in my shoes..."  :-[
