Subject: Favorite 80's vacation

Written By: Class of 84 on 11/18/05 at 10:17 pm

Where did you go for your favorite vacation in the 80's, and which 80's songs do you associate with it?  For me, it was Myrtle Beach in 1986, camping on the ocean, just some friends and I.  The song "Rumors" takes me back, being around the campfire at night, the ocean breeze blowing, the sound of the waves.....ahhh...... :-\\

I like it whan that happens...

Uh...summer 1980, flew to Chicago and spent the summer visiting relatives all over the state (have relatives ALL OVER Illinois), swimming (Rend Lake), family picnics, hanging out with my cousins...yeah, good times...

The songs associated with that vacation are: My Sharona - The Knack, Take Your Time (Do It Right) - The Dazz Band (I never liked these but my older cousins played them to death) New York Groove - Ace Frehley, and Gene Simmons' Solo Album in it's entirety.  I was a huge KISS fan at this time and scored those two solo albums on this trip...

I went to Corpus Christy and San Antonio Texas for Spring Break in 1986.  We had a blast but the water was a little cold.  Tip to all of the women out there:  Do not shave your legs right before you go into the ocean!  BURN BURN BURN!!!  I learned the hard way!

I think it was about 1985, and my younger brother (who was about 10, I was 14) was in a local youth track club, and he qualified for a national meet in Philadelphia. So me, my parents and my brother all piled into my dad's trusty 1974 VW Bus (which he still has!) and headed east. Since none of us had ever been further east than Des Moines this was going to be a new experience for all of us. Highlight so trip include:

Chicago--Went to the Taste Of Chicago festival, and took an elevator to the top of the Sears Tower.

Philly: Toured U.S. Mint, Independence Hall, saw Liberty Bell, rode subway for first time. I don't remember exactly how well my brother did in his meet but I remember it was respectable.

Atlantic City: Went to boardwalk, hung out on beach, parents did a little gambling.

New York: Took ferry out to Statue Of Liberty. I remember thinking it was a lot smaller than I expected. Dad drove Bus into NYC (through Lincoln or Holland Tunnel), drove down Broadway. (I think we may have even drove past the World Trade Center.) I wanted to stay in NYC for a day or two, Dad wanted to get the hell out. Hindsight being 20/20, I can't say I blamed him.

I don't remember much about the rest of the trip, only that we camped out at some nice park in upstate New York and that we broke down just outside Minneapolis en route to North Dakota to visit relatives. I can't help if that trip was a factor in my decision to become a truck driver.

Summer of '82, went with my family for 2 weeks to Cape Codd, Mass, and had a great time! Since then, it's been a frequent vacationing spot for the past 23 years.

Lot of good responses  :)  I would be remiss if I failed to mention also my honymoon in 1988 at Virginia Beach, Tybee Island, Georgia in 1987 where Phil Collins and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam remind me of. 8)
