Never understood you people.  I was 7 to 9 1/2 years old (and still remaining in the "single digits") from 1982 to 1985, and I remember quite a bit of the pop culture of those years.  I even have a hazy memory of 1981 pop culture.  So I never got why people that were in single digits through the rest of the 80s could never remember anything beyond He-Man or the Ninja Turtles.

I remember Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He Man (Masters of the Universe), Thundercats, Muppet Babies, Smurfs, and a couple more cartoons, though for the rest (ie most movies & music)... don't recall.

Same for the early '90's, which I was more into Tiny Toons & Power Rangers instead of Nirvana & The Smashing Pumpkins and wasn't familiar with "current trends" until I was around 12/13.

Then again, some of the mentioned cartoons were either still around or in reruns...

Now, I mostly prefer  classic Disney & Warner Bros. shorts from the early/mid 20th century and a very few from the late '80's/early '90's since I've seen them (again as a  21 year old) from video rentals..

I think kids stayed kids for longer as time goes by. Plus cartoons were on all the time by the late 80's with everyone having cable etc. I'm thinking it helps a lot if you have older brothers and sisters, as to how much pop culture you remember. I even remember the late 70's! I started kindergarten at aged 2 and a half and vividly remember my first day there and all my friends. I even remember the era of Saturday Night Fever.

Yeah that's true about having older siblings.  I have an older sibling born in 1970.  So I always had a window into the world of 80s teenagers. (that ones that actually graduated high school in the 80s I mean)

I was around more adults despite having younger siblings. So, I hung around them more often than children my own age.

I know we all can tend to get carried away in these kind of threads, so I'll keep my next point concise, but honestly, what puzzles me most is how some people say "I was just being a kid in , so I didn't care about pop culture" etc.

I can buy it if they were 5 years old or under, or maybey even 6 and under.

Subject: Re: How old were you in 1988?

Written By: Marty McFly on 12/16/05 at 10:01 am

Yeah, I'd say the time before Elementary school tends to be selective. I mean, I have fuzzy memories of, say 1985 (when I was 3-4).

Perfect example: the other night, I watched a couple old home movies of ours from around then -- hadn't seen 'em in ages. I kept freezing it to look around our old house, and it was weird (cool, but weird) since I remembered some of it quite differently than it really was. So yeah, at that age, it's understandable.

But something from 1990, or even maybe 1987 I'll remember with detail for the rest of my life.

And by the time I was 12 (1993/94) I watched things like Dateline and politics on TV sometimes, so I have a very structured memory of that time (which, again, is why it totally puzzles me to hear some people say they didn't even care about/remember popular SONGS when they were 12!).

It's a generation thing, personal tastes, or the fact there's some who are into the stuff they liked in the past or not.

Though I had older relatives, I didn't really cared what they were into and I even distance myself from some current trends as a teen.

I was a whopping 6 years old! But, I remember that year fairly clearly - although some of the memories have become quite fuzzy as well.

I celebrated my 6th birthday at Chuck E Cheese, and I remember requesting a black and white TV... and I got one! Spud Mackenzie (that Budwieser dog mascot) was the theme for my birthday and I wore a really cute green dress that I wish I could find a larger version of it now and wear it, lol.

It's a bit bogus to me that someone wouldn't even remember much at even 4 or 5 years old.. but not to remember anything at 7 or 8 is making you wonder if that person was living at all

Woah.  I was 7 months old at the start of the year, yet I still have vivid memories about the decade... which is strange, since I only spent little more than two years of my life in it.  Guess that's partly why I connect with 80s music so much.  I can still recall my mum slagging off Jason Donovan, and his chart career was over and done with by 1991.

I can relate to that. I took roller skating lessons for about 3 years and I'd stay there for countless hours listening to 80's music - over and over - plus the 70's stuff mixed in with it, too. I loved it just as much for the loud music as I did for the skating.

I was 16 turning 17 the summer of 88

You are sixteen going on seventeen, baby it's time to think
Better beware, be canny and careful, baby you're on the brink
You are sixteen going on seventeen, fellows will fall in line
Eager young lads, and roues and cads
Will offer you food and wine
Totally unprepared are you, to face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared are you, of things beyond your ken
You need someone older and wiser, telling you what to do
I am seventeen going on eighteen, I'll take care of you

I was 28 but still felt 20... had a 3 yr old daughter that I adored....and a bad marriage. Later divorced she would listen to music and MTV videos with me ( the ones that weren't inappropriate for her) along with growng up withthe Smurffs, Ninja Turtles,etc......She is now 20 and she remembers all the music and the bands and loves it. But she loves all kinds of music. The 80's were definitely unique as were the 70's. If time does in fact repeat itself some lucky future generation is in for a real treat.

Every once in a while wed have dances(sock hops) on the skate floor (we had a BIG turnout those nights.) I still have over 100 45's with 80'S music on them. When Cd's came out my parrents gave them all to ME! . You could leave the building and cross the street to the convenience store /gas station and STILL hear the music pounding away. The teenangers started hanging out at the gas station to listen:) They filled the tiny parking lot up but we never once had any complaints!

Yes, we had those sorts of things at the rink, too. We had Spring Programs where lots of skaters in the same region as ours would skate at our rink (it was like a competition without the medals, lol). I don't know if you had heard of GoldSkate, but that was like the Roller Skating version of the Olympics. We would go there down to Bakersfield, CA, and skate at this HUGE roller skating rink. I think they were regulary held in February.

In fact, I rarely go to the mall or places like that anymore - Goodwill is like a goldmine to me, esp since I'm into many "older" things anyway.

BTW, on that note, in the past few years that I've regularly shopped there (1998-now), even though the age of items is totally varied, a good lot of it is from the 90's. Or about 10-15 years prior.

I bet Goodwill stores circa 1988 had tons of 70's stuff with some early 80's things, like ghettoblasters and legwarmers just starting to drift in.

13 years old for most of 88 until November, my birthday.  I consider myself pretty lucky growing up when I did.  It gave me enough time to grow cynical enough before the Backstreet Boys and Britney ruined everything that is holy.  I'm a professional DJ.  I just did a New Years party and a twelve year old kid asked me to play "Jump" by Van Halen, "Jesse's Girl" and anything by Styx.  The eighties are alive in the kids today!  At 31, I listen to more eighties now than I did then.

I know right.  I remember a whooole lot from my single years from 1980 to 1986.  I remember when I was 3, I went to Wildwood.  When I was 4, I went to Cleveland, Ohio. Everywhere my mom went, I went.  This was before I was in a foster home and before I lived with my father afterwards.  I remember when I started kindergarten when I was 5.  I remember I was 6, Michael Jackson was at its peak, and I remember listening to the WHOLE album over my grandmother's house.  They used to wear that album OUT!!!!!  I remember when when my brother and I used to play Atari together at 6.  I remember watching Poltergeist on HBO a year after its release, and I wanted to be like Caroline because she was the youngest, and she was around my age group, and I would put my hands on the TV screen.  I remember when ET first came out, and it was a big deal at the time.  I didn't go to the movies to see it, but I remember the ET commercials and the ET games and dolls.  I remember when I was 7 in 1984, I remember Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, New Edition, Ghostbusters, Snorks, Duran Duran, Phil Collins, Run DMC, Whodini, Beat Street, Dancin On Air, Stevie Wonder, etc.

Especially since IMO we're now even past the peak of '80s nostalgia, now that classic hits (FKA "Oldies") stations are now adding more '90s than '80s titles into their rotation, even including Cher's Believe with autotune. Of course, if another Clinton will be elected, that will be the death knell for the '80s as being the cool decade to be nostalgic about, which make sense since '80s nostalgia was at its best development during the Bush 43 era, the son of the Vice President during the '80s and the President during the '90s transition that still had waning influence. At least I'll still be checking VHS and Beta tapes for the closest experience for the real thing, and unlike the earlier '80s, its still fairly easy to find TV recordings and home recorded videos off a camcorder from 1988 if you know where to look. I do remember watching The Price Is Right and seeing some summer reruns in 1988 where Bob Barker had dark hair from the early fall 1987 episodes that they aired, along with some episodes with a different dollar sign pattern on the Big Wheel, and in a diary has mentions of me watching Cheers and Mr. Belvedere.

1988 was the year my family and I moved to Rhode Island. I had turned 8, and had to attend a different school of course. It was hard and I didn't like school, but I made up for it when I would go home from school and VH1 was on! Made me a happy girl! :)
