Subject: 80's songs that are overplayed

Written By: whistledog on 01/04/06 at 5:53 pm

What are some 80's songs that you think are often overplayed, both then and even now?

How about these ...

Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham!
Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart
Need You Tonight - INXS
Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon
Venus - Bananarama

And for my fellow Canucks, here's a few more ...

(You're A) Strange Animal - Gowan
Patio Lanterns - Kim Mitchell
Your Daddy Don't Know - Toronto
Teenland - Northern Pikes
Makin' it Work - Doug and the Slugs

1999 - Prince
Who Can It Be Now - Men at Work
Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
Only the Lonely - The Motels

Dude Looks Like A Lady - Aerosmith
Keep Your Hands To Yourself - Georgia Satellites
Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx
Straight Up - Paula Abdul
Kokomo - Beach Boys
Man In The Mirror - Michael Jackson
Legs - ZZ Top <i think that's 80's anyway>

And definitely overplayed back then, but almost never played now...

We Are The World - USA For Africa

Rebel Yell -Billy Idol
Jack & Diane -John Cougar Mellencamp
Land Down Under -Men At Work
You're The Voice -John Farnham
Funky Town -Pseudo Echo
Just about anything by a band called 1927

Some of these are really good songs, but played so many times, they lost their magic for me. :D

That Farnham track sure did get overkill.

Same with another song of his, "Two Strong Hearts" (1989)

Yes, and don't forget 'Age of Reason'

All three of them got lots of overkill on the radio

Damn, you people are good. Nailed them all.

(But of all that were mentioned, I'd probably give an overplayed pass to Soft Cell's "Tainted Love", just because it's a great remake)
:)

On one of the odd occasions that I listen to the radio, an announcer introduced "Tainted Love" as one of the greatest pop songs of the 80s. Once again, that song has been sooo flogged to death, it has really lost it's magic for me.

"Little Lies" by Fleetwood Mac is another one.

Rap music on MuchMoreRetro. I love that show, but they don't really stick to the title when they play rap. Even worse, the station that it's on doesn't even play Rock Me Amadeus or Major Tom (Coming Home).

Never Ending Story by Limahl used to get flogged pretty hard, though I haven't heard it for a while.
Also:
Danger Zone -Kenny Loggins
Cold As Ice -Foreigner
Simply Irresistable -Robert Palmer, which I didn't like the 1st time I heard it, much less the 100th.
Dancin' On The Ceiling -Lionel Ritchie

She Blinded Me with Science by Thomas Dolby
Freeze Frame by The J. Geils Band
Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles
Sweet Dreams Are Made of This by The Eurythmics

All good songs, mind you, but played to death during those  80s retro hours on the radio and featured on every 80s music compilation CD ever made...  :D

Also...

Bon Jovi "Wanted Dead Or Alive", "Livin' On A Prayer"
Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine", "Welcome To The Jungle"
U2 "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Pride (In The Name Of Love), the hits from "Joshua Tree" album

Anything Phil Collins  ::)

I don't know why radio stations only play certain songs, even those that had more than 5 hits (ie U2, Duran Duran, INXS, etc) and don't play certain songs or artists anymore
