Subject: Calling Madonna wannabe's/80s fashion experts!

Written By: Chipette on 01/11/06 at 10:47 am

I've got a costume party coming up and the theme is Vintage. I'm going as Madonna, as she looked in the 80s. Expect I have a problem. For the look, I need to tease my hair and I've never done this before. I have no idea how to go about it and want to test it so I know that I'll be able to get the look right by the time of the party (which is in two weeks).

I basically want to achive this look: http://www.madonnashots.net/luckcp07.jpg

However, my hair is naturally curly (frizzy when unstyled/unwashed) and when I wash it, it forms itself into ringlets...so I'm not sure if this will be a problem when it comes to teasing my hair?

I was joining this board anyway and thought it would be the perfect place to get help with this.

Also, anyone know where get to get any black mesh tank tops similar to Madonna's? I want to get the look as close as possible. Especially since there's going to going to be a contest for best costume! ;) :)

it shouldn't be a problem
do you have access to a "crimpler" hair iron? it gives your hair the shapes of corrugated steel-- so very 80's!!!

try to get your hands on flourescent green/yellow bows for your hair!!!

Hi. My mum has a crimpler. I haven't ever used one on my hair before but I'll try it. Should be interesting. :p

I'll try eBay for hair accessories and vintage jewellry. I already got some cute lacy fingerless gloves from there.

Thanks. :)

Try some back-combing as well. To do this, just hold up sections of your hair and use a medium-tooth comb to comb down towards the scalp. I used to do that to my friends hair and achieved just the look of Madonna in the photo. A word of warning: Back-combing + hairsoray = a big mess to comb out in the morning. Have fun and post some pic of yourself here! ;)

these are pix of Kim Richards from the 1985 movie "Tuff Turf". Note the crimpled hair and lacy, fingerless gloves.

Wow that is quite a look that Kim had happening there! ;)
I remember my 1st ever school dance, back in 1988: A girl in my class brought her crimping iron to school and some girls got their fringes crimped. Plenty of ponytails and crimped fringes that nigh, pllenty of ra-ra skirts too! :D

I have never seen the movie, but she looks really cool! If I was a teenager in the 80s, I'm pretty sure I would be dressing like that!!

I too once dressed up as Madonna at my own 80s 18th party - I went for a similar look and my hair is also curly. I just made it more wavy, basically by using mouse and, then slightly brushing through the curls that were forming!

ok the secret is... Aqua Net and  Lots of Hair Gel.. Aussie Sprunch Spray will work..  and get one of those skinny little pencil curling irons.. and a rat tail comb.. you'll be teasing to your hearts  desire.. you just have to wash your hair about a half a dozen times to get all the build up out of your hair. big dangly cross earring  in one ear and hoops in the  other.

Thanks everyone, this has been really helpful. I'll do some experimenting next week...need to go out and buy a few hair products first. :)
