Subject: The 70s Backlash of the '80s

Written By: Donnie Darko on 01/17/06 at 12:32 am

How hard was it?  Harder than the '80s backlash of the '90s?

I know it began in 1979 with "Disco Is Dead".

In some ways, harder -- in some ways, not as hard.

I think it was 70's fashion and look that people dissed the h*ll out of in the 80's, whereas it was 80's pop culture that was backlashed in most of the 90's. The technology and basic things were not, though (music videos, tapes, typewriters, etc).

70's and 80's music were IMHO, more alike than 80's and 90's (probably because of rap and grunge, whereas both the 70's and 80's are kinda "classic rock" eras). Movies made before 1984 have a vague 70's styled filming to them, just in the quality of it (hard to explain precisely, but watch Mr. Mom from 1983 - this seemed very late 70-ish to me).

But from what I know, even though people were kinda getting sick of the 70's in 1979, the backlash didn't really take full swing until about late 1982 or '83.

Disco s'posedly died in 1979, yet well into around 1983, there were still Disco songs entering the charts.  The last Disco song I can recall being popular was 'Friends' by Amii Stewart in late 1984, although i s'pose that was more italo/euro disco if anything

I think it depends on which part of the '70s you're talking about with the music.  80s music is probably closer to 1975-79 music than 90s music, but closer to '90s than early '70s and of course '60s music.

Good point. I'd say there's a cutoff point around 1986 though (just '86 to '87 feels alot different musically. 80-86 feels more "classic rock-ish" whereas '87 feels like the very VERY beginning of the "modern" era, if that makes sense).

1986 and before is definitely more 1976-79 ish, but 1987-89 music is more 90's.

That's true.  I would say though, that 1983-1989 is closer to '90s than '60s/early '70s.
