Subject: REM - 80s or 90s band?

Written By: Donnie Darko on 01/20/06 at 3:44 pm

Are REM a late '80s or early '90s band?  They're one of the few bands that have been classified as both New Wave and Grunge before.  Personally, I'd say they're neither and put them more in Pixies/Jane's Addiction realm, of anything.  I'd call them an early '90s band.

Late 80's, Early 90's.  From 1987-1994, was pretty much their time.  Everything they released after "What's the Frequency Kenneth" wasn't all that great  :\'(

Early 90's.

yep, my favorite 2 albums from them came from 91-92, 'out of time' and 'automatic for the people'  :)

My 2 favorite songs by R.E.M are "Stand" and "Orange Crush".  So I consider them a late 80's band band.

I've always viewed REM as a bridge between the 80s and 90s. Like U2, they've managed to remain relevant, if not as commercially successful as Bono and company post-Monster. Between my older sister's incessant playing of "Murmur" in the 80s and my own discovery of the group, I practically grew up with REM.  :)

IMO, "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" was good album.

The five song EP "Chronic Town" was the first release that I know of by them and it came out in 81. I saw them in late 81 early 82, so to me, I guess that makes them an 80s band...

NozmoKing... twoscore and five years.
