Subject: 80's songs with Saxophones

Written By: 80s Boy on 01/22/06 at 1:13 am

The sax sounded so great in the 80's.  What are your favourite 80's hits that feature a saxophone?

Psychedelic Furs: Here Come Cowboys (and many other P.Furs songs with sax)
Love & Rockets: Waiting for the Flood
Dream Academy: Edge of Forever
Eurythmics: I Love to Listen to Beethoven; Missionary Man
Herbie Hancock: Rockit
Romeo Void: A Girl In Trouble is a Temporary Thing; Never Say Never
Wham!: Careless Whisper
Spandau Ballet: True
Quarterflash: Take Me To Heart

Soft Cell: Torch (and other Soft Cells w/ sax)
The The: Uncertain Smile
OMD: So In Love (and others with OMD saxophonist Martin Cooper)
I know Heaven 17, Human League, and Thompson Twins all had cool songs with sax, but I can't remember the titles off the top of my head!

Cool topic. Aside from those already mentioned, here's a few off the top of my head:

You Belong to the City - Glenn Frey
Take Me Home Tonight - Eddie Money
Modern Love - David Bowie
Arthur's Theme - Christopher Cross
Urgent - Foreigner

Not from the 80's, but there was a saxophone instrumental on the flip side of Frankie Valli's 'Grease', which really made me want to learn how to play one...which I eventually did!

Best one from the 80's?

The long-winded (but very satisfying one) in Hazel O'Connor's 'Will You'...

INXS has some great songs with saxophone in them...Original Sin, What You Need, etc.  Also, I liked the Waitresses' "I Know What Boys Like" which has a cool sax solo in it, even the video for that song features a psychedelic sequence with images coming out of the saxophone.

For some reason, the '80s had a lot of saxophone.

"Our House" - Madness (actually that may be trombone or trumpet)
"Careless Whisper" - Wham!

That would be 1978.  Common misconception though.  Still, a great use of a saxophone :)

Thankfully, the saxophone was still a very popular instrument in the 80's.  8)

Anything by the group, the English Beat.  :D  Their saxophone player SAXA had a very prominent place in their overall sound.

Ah, just remembered the saxophone playing in 'Waiting for a star to fall' by Boy Meets Girl - totally 80s.  8)
