Subject: Mullets

Written By: karen on 02/06/06 at 7:08 am

There is a programme on the BBC at the moment looking at the origins of various words.  They are working with the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) to try and date some words.  They need printed evidence of a word in use.  One I thought people here might have something about is

"mullet"

"Wanted: Printed evidence before 1994; information of the word's origin.

The infamous hairstyle. Did you sport a mullet and call it that before the 1994 Beastie Boys' song 'Mullet Head'? A mullet-head is 'a stupid person', after the earlier meaning 'an imaginary fish with no brains'. Is this the origin? There are other offers."

So has anyone got any magazines talking about this style?  Or even referred to it in a diary? (apparently this might count)  If so you can go to the BBC site here and contact the OED.

When you've lost the hair on top of your head growing the rest out isn't going to make up for it. If you plan on doing the epic comb over of brushing it up over your head that would look so ridiculous people would laugh for days!

I never heard of that term until late '90s.

In fact, I didn't really know what it meant, anyway.

Real-life people didn't have mullets.  Maybe some stars did, but guys in our school didn't, unless they were grits.  Only grits possibly had that kind of thing.  Usually, it was just plain long hair.  Like Steve Perry on Journey or something.

BTW, some of the pix here I do not know if that is appropriate to label them.

Some would probably say I had a mullet.  I spiked my hair big time into a virtual mohawk, gradually pulling up from the sides, and usually had some length left in the back.  (I'm a girl.)  I never thought of it that way, more just spiking, but with the apparently loose definition shown, I might fit in.

I would say almost none of those are mullets, they are just guys with longer hair.  Your dad's photo isn't quite so clear.

Typically mullets are cut short around the front and sides (so neat around the ears) and only the back part is long.

It doesn't really look like a mullet to me though. Mullets have to make some pretense of having bangs or hair facing frontwards somehow. This is completely pushed back. I think it's a different category. "Mullet", not unlike "nostalgia",  is one of those words people throw around more loosely now than they used to.

I saw a picture of Tony Blair. He looks like lots of people at the moment i.e. in need of a haircut. My dad is sporting a similar style, albeit a bit thinner on top. I wouldn’t call it a mullet.

Maybe someone should've cut his hair instead?

Perhaps he didn’t trust his wife.

Cherie Blair is known professionally as a barrister, lecturer, and writer, so her finger dexterity with haircutting may not be known.

But 'Cherie with the scissors' has a ring to it.

Perhaps he didn’t trust his wife.

His wife would've probably botched his hair.

My cousin gave me a mullet type haircut in 1988. It was fluffy in the front, and long in the back. Lol. I have various pictures but they're in a storage.

With most of the hair I have on my head, I could never wear a mullet.

Today is Tony Blair's 68th birthday, let us hope he has managed to his hair done for his celebrations?
