Subject: Weird 80's films.

Off hand which 80's films strike you, as being the strangest?

I would have to say, Xtro is a weird film.

One of the strangest 80's films I ever saw was Subway starring Christopher Lambert

It has been some 15 years since I saw it.  Maybe what I thought was weird back then is great now  :-\\

"Repo Man" is aways a good choice for weird!  It may be the quintessential '80s weird movie!
8)

I would say the weirdest major motion picture* of the '80s was either:
"Eating Raoul" (1982)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0083869/
or
"Parents" (1989)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0098068/
(in these two cases, you've got "normal" people as cannibals, which is quite weird)
or
"Smithereens" (1982)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0084698/
("Smithereens" is particularly weird and horrifying for its insipid banality!)
or
"Koyaanisqatsi" (1983)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0085809/
(high-speed photography of urban decay to the minimalist music of Philip Glass.  The musical style and the theme of the film have consequently become commonplace--even passe--but Koyaanisqatsi will always be way weird when watched without prejudice!)
or
"Blue Velvet" (1986)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0090756/
(If it had not been so successful, David Lynch may not have turned into a self-congratulating crapmeister!)
or
"Santa Sangre" (1989)
(Alejandro Jodorowsky, 'nuff said!)

+ two weird "buddy" movies:

"Birdy" (1984)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0086969/

"Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0089424/plotsummary

*I specify only to exclude the two NYU film students with an 8mm camera, whichever two NYU film students with an 8mm camera they may have been!

But some weird ones that I really liked were:
They Live (starring wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper) (1988)

"I'm here to kick a** and chew bubblegum...and I'm all out of bubblegum."  8)

The Thing (1982)

This movie freaked me out. I remember seeing at as a tyke during a trip to see relatives. The fact that the "thing" in question could leap from person to person (or animal to person) really messed with my head. It was a gruesome flick for its day...

Prince of Darkness is also a weird film.

Subject: Re: Weird 80's films.

I'm not sure it was exactly weird but does anyone remember "Dungeon Master" (I think it was called), a sort of fantasy version of "Tron", another good example is "Battle Beyond the Stars" and of cause the two "Gyver" movies, the one that took the cake was called "Girl in a Swing" or something like that, that was really a weird movie.

BTW
I'm not an especially big fan of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" but it is in my DVD collection, if nothing else because Mia Sara is in it.

Some weird movies of the '80's...hmmm...well, definitely a movie that a little on the strange side would be Weird Science. I already mentioned this on another thread, I know but another strange movie from the '80's is Altered States.  I agree with whoever said that anything by Troma is pretty weird but the weirdest Troma movie was The Toxic Avenger. Also on my list:

The Curse of the Screaming Dead (another Troma film!)
Sleepaway Camp
Bolero
The Warrior and the Sorceress

That's all I can think of now, but if I think of more later I will list them!

One Word:  "Eraserhead"

One Word (again):  "Brazil"

"Killer Klowns" was actually something I enjoyed.  "Little Shop of Horrors" actually managed to be out-shined by it's predecessor, which if rumor can be believed, had a budget of $100,000.  It was truly bad, but not the weirdest.  Anyone who's seen either of the 2 above, will have to admit that a strong case can be made for them.

Somebody has already mentioned David Lynch's "Blue Velvet." He also made "Dune" and "Elephant Man" during that decade.

Somebody has also mentioned Ken Russell's "Altered States." He also made "Crimes of Passion," "Gothic," "Lair of the White Worm," and "Salome's Last Dance" during that decade.

Dark Crystal was weird but in a good watchable way.

I agree with Popeye and Little Shop of Horrors, though not seen them since their original release, so I was young.

My contribution to this thread is Amazon Women on The Moon (1987). I watched it as an 11 yr old and couldn't quite make it all out.
