Subject: Countries Where The Eighties Are Still Popular

Written By: Donnie Darko on 02/21/06 at 2:47 am

Are there countries getting our eighties in the '00s?  i.e. similar music, trends, technology, etc.?

I think New Wave still sells great in Germany.

The 80's is still somewhat popular here in Canada.  On our cable music video channel "Much More Music", there is a show called "Much More Retro" that plays mostly all 80's videos.  It became so popular, they launched it into it's own 24 hour cable channel

Canada would be one of them.

I'm sure there are still some small country towns stuck in the '80s (1880s that is)  ::)

Jersey, though I don't know if we QUITE count as a country...hair metal and new wave get constant play on the radio, and you can see fairly young hair metal fans everywhere in certain areas, along with the big hair hairdo and some '80s-style looks, in general, like huge hoop earrings with big hair and baggy clothes.

In France, Germany, Scandinavia, and all of Eastern Europe, from what I gather, American culture from the '80s is still fairly popular.

In Australia, the 80s are still fairly big business -clothing styles, 80s bands re-forming and touring, etc. It does seem though, that things are somewhat returning to "normal" :(

New Jersey is more '80s than Los Angeles.  LA was very '80s, but it became very '90s with the gang stuff (although I guess that began in the mid-to-late '80s).

I think it has something to do with the fact that hair metal has a big blue-collar white audience, and we have alot of blue-collar white people in NJ, particularly Italian-Americans, and most Italian-Americans aren't big rap fans. Long Island is sort of still that way, too...the '90s never fully took off and it's sort of a melding of '80s and '00s stuff.
