Subject: 1989

Is it just me, or does this year not fit in, with the rest of the decade? Looking back, it just doesn't seem 80's to me. I remember this year like it was yesterday, and for whatever reason, it just stands apart somehow. Does anyone else feel this way, or any other weird years for you?

Yeah, 1989 was sort of pre-'90s, it wasn't really all that '80s in atmosphere anymore. It wasn't the fully-fledged '90s, but it was after the '80s were diminished.

I think 1989 is to the eighties what 1999 is to the nineties.  Kind of a "misfit" relative to 1980-86 and even to 1987 and '88, and a precursor to the early and mid nineties.

But, I think 1989 (and 1999, for that matter) are both part of their respective decades.  In fact, I think 1990 and early 1991 are in many ways still the late eighties, in a non-literal sense.  Ditto goes for the pre-9/11 part of the '00s; 2000 and early '01 were really more similar to the late '90s than to now.

I remember a trio of underwater sci-fi/horror movies that came out that year; "Deepstar Six", "The Abyss", and "Leviathan". I liked 'em all but then again I'm easily entertained.

Mid-1989 to mid-1991 were sort of what I call the "pre-90s", the mid-1999 to mid-2001 period was sort of the "post-90s."

I remember it like it was yesterday also (I turned 19 that year) and it was very much still 1980's feel and atmosphere.

I think 1989 still had the 80's feel and atmosphere but it was starting to tilt a little toward the 90's IMO.
