I would say "Axel F".  In fact, I'm gonna download it right now...

I think it is "Rainforest", by Paul Hardcastle.

And there were others as well.  "Peter Gunn" by Art Of Noise, the themes from "Chariots Of Fire", "St. Elmo's Fire", "Hill Street Blues", and "The Simpsons" (if you discount the words "The Simpsons" at the beginning of the song).

And of course there was "Hooked On Classics", and a bunch of medley style songs that copied the style (Hooked on Jazz, Hooked On Big Band, Stuck On TV).

And I am not quite sure if I would call "Oh, Yeah" an insturmental though.  It did have words after all, if only a few lines worth.

Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah
The moon... beautiful
The sun... even more beautiful
Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah

Beautiful
Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah...

Good time

I guess it depends on what you consider the boundary between instrumental and not. For example: Does "Tequila" by The Champs qualify? "Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac? I tend to distinguish between completely instrumental songs (like "Axel F" by Harold Faltemeyer) and include within that group songs that have voice but used as instrument as opposed to used to form any sort of words (eg "The Dis-Advantages of You" by Brass Ring") and songs that are basically instrumental but have some words ("Oh Well" etc.), but really, each individual will have his/her own criteria.

Who can forget "Rockit" by Oscar Winner Herbie Hancock?  The video was always on MTV.  The song was a staple for breakdancing.

Other:

Enya was described as New Wave when she first appeared as a solo artist in 1988, so I vote for The River.

Other, for me too.

I'll go with the already mentioned

Moments in Love -- The Art of Noise
Rainforest -- Paul Hardcastle

plus

Beat Box (Diversion One) -- The Art of Noise

and maybe

Sirius & Mammagamma -- The Alan Parsons Project
