Subject: The Shakin' Stevens Poll

Written By: whistledog on 03/07/06 at 9:25 pm

Shakin' Stevens had a total of 39 UK Hits ("I Can Help" never charted, "Mona Lisa" was a Japan single and "Your Mama Said You Cried" was a Holland release)

The only American hit he had was 'I Cry Just A Little Bit' which reached #67 on Billboard in 1984.  In 1982 though, Barry Manilow reached #38 with a cover of 'Oh Julie'

In case you are not familiar with some of these songs, here are sound clips of most of them ...

Hot Dog
Marie Marie
This Ole House
You Dwive Me Cwazy
Green Door
It's Raining
Oh Julie
Shirley
Give Me Your Heart Tonight
I'll Be Satisfied
Blue Christmas
It's Late
Cry Just A Little Bit
A Rockin' Good Way (to Mess Around and Fall in Love)
A Love Worth Waiting For
A Letter to You
Teardrops
Breaking Up My Heart
Lipstick, Powder and Paint
Merry Christmas Everyone
Turning Away
Because I Love You
A Little Boogie Woogie (in the Back of My Mind)
Come See About Me
What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes At Me For
Feel the Need in Me
How Many Tears Can You Hide
True Love
Love Attack
I Might
Radio

I voted "You Drive me Crazy", though your link for that doesn't seem to work, maybe cos you spelt it "Dwive"... ha ha.

The link does work.  Perhaps the site I took the clip from was down for a bit.  Happens often it seems

You Dwive Me Cwazy is how he sings it in the song.  I actually used to think that's what the song was called and that the album was a misprint ;D

I voted for "Turning Away", "It's Raining" and "Oh, Julie" although I may need to make sure those were my three choices. I have a CD of his greatest hits (and a DVD, too!), but it's at my Boyfriends right now so I haven't been able to listen to it in awhile.

My absolute favorite is "A Letter To You." I picked "Green Door" also, but the rest are too equal for me to pick a third.

That may be true, but it was never charted and I don't recall ever having heard the song.

I can't say I've ever heard his version (I do know the song)...and as our releases near-enough mirrored those of The Netherlands, I'm wondering if it ever was a single release...

I tend to steer well clear of his later stuff...

I picked 'Marie Marie' (great song!), 'You Drive Me Crazy' (which he won a songwriting award for) and 'This Ole House' (which made me go out and find Rosemary Clooney's 1954 version!)

Never let it be said that my interest doesn't get 'stirred'...

It was indeed a Dutch release, but oddly not released here!

Released there on Epic A 3262 (if you like catalogue numbers!)

Makes you wonder... Why would he have released this song solely in The Netherlands, when apparently there was no demand for it over here? It didn't get any airplay, it wasn't charted... and I doubt very much if anyone actually BOUGHT the single. :-\\

Perhaps they were going to release it globally, but decided to release it in the NL first to see how well it would do.

Didn't Rosemary Clooney have a huge hit in the '50s with "This Ole House"?
