Subject: '80s songs that sound like they're from an older decade?
Written By: Marty McFly on 03/24/06 at 3:05 am
I'm not sure if it's because there was a '50s nostalgia feeling through most of the decade, or just the basically wide scope of '80s music in general. But wouldn't you agree, alot of songs from then almost sounded like they could've come from the actual '50s/60s?
A few decidedly retro ones off the top of my head:
On the Dark Side - John Cafferty
Tell Her About it - Billy Joel
Sea of Love - The Honeydrippers
I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues - Elton John
They Don't Know - Tracey Ullman
Anything Stray Cats

anything by Shakin' Stevens. He mostly did his songs in a 50s and 60's style though and they were all great :)
I always thought some of Elvis Costello's songs (Everyday I Write the Book, The Only Flame in Town, Veronica) sort of had a 60's feel to them
Through the Years by Tim Finn
Breakaway by Tracey Ullman
Move Over Darling by Traceu Ullman
There's A Guy Works Down the Chip Shop (Swears He's Elvis) - Kirsty MacColl
Rockin' at Midnight - The Honeydrippers
Then of course there were artists who covered 50's songs ...
Since I Don't Have You by Don McLean
Earth Angel by New Edition

^I guess I should've known about "Earth Angel" just based on my username. ;D
Also, I think some of the less popular tracks on Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA were '50s-like in their own way. The hits are more '80s, but I'm talking about stuff like "Darlington County" and "Bobby Jean".

All of those Tracey Ullman songs sound like they're from an older decade 'cause they're remakes of songs from an older decade ;) Same with quite a few Shaky tunes
Love In The First Degree - Alabama
Island of Lost Souls - Blondie
Centerfield - John Fogerty

A lot of '70s holdovers, such as It's Raining Men. Also, Huey Lewis sounds very '50s, but with an '80s twist.
