Five years late, but here ya go, direct from Playville to Light Town (where the billboard reads "Lighten up and Play")

P8LARnyyJKI

Milky Way chocolate bar commercial, ca. 1989

The red car and the blue car had a race,
All Red wants to do is stuff his face,
He eats everything he sees,
From trucks to prickly trees,
But good old Blue, he took the Milky Way!

He’s looking for a chocolate treat, fluffy and light,
'Cos he knows it's something that tastes just right!

(Mmm!)

Oh no!  The bridge has gone, Old Red can’t carry on!
But good old Blue, he took the Milky Way!

Except those might not be the real lyrics.  There was a different version, with subtly-altered lyrics:

SoXJL2hL6kI

In this version of the commercial, the red and blue cars raced from Lunchville to Dinnertown, and it was smart old Blue who took the Milky Way, 'cos he knew it won't spoil his appetite, and the billboard at the jump to Dinnertown read "You can eat between meals without (spoiling? ruining?) your appetite".

So we now have a mystery.  Which aired first (and/or in which country)?  I'm betting the high-res one is the bowdlerized copy, and the one that suggests that eating between meals would not only taste just right, but would not spoil one's appetite and therefore was the smart (not the "good") option... I'm betting that was the original version of the ad that eventually got censored on behalf of the food puritans, who were willing to tolerate "light" as a descriptor for food, and even then, only grudgingly.

(Food Puritans: People with the haunting feeling that somewhere, someone is enjoying a chocolate bar.)

Like Foo I can remember that the version that is currently shwn on UK tv is the one I remember from the 80s when it first aired.

I think the end bit was

He's looking for a treat that's fluffy and light
because he knows it won't spoil his appetite

Oh no the bridge has gone
poor old red can't carry on
but smart old blue
he took the milky way

Check the second version of the commercial in my post - that's it!  I just had no idea it was a UK vs US thing.

Even more weirdly it is now the Us version that is playing in the UK (I think).  I'll pay more attention the next time it is on.

Well, I was guessing as to which version was which (based on a guesstimate of 80s-vs-10s marketing buzzword compliance).  I could well have been completely wrong - I haven't seen it aired on US television in living memory.  If it's currently airing in the UK, let us know which is which and I'll edit my original post to correct the mistake.

Saw this advert again yesterday.  It is definitely "good old blue, he took the milky way".  The sign at the end says Lighten up and play.

Of course something I forgot in all this, Maxwell's post reminded me  The Milky Way sold in the UK is not the same as the Milky way sold in the US.  The US Milky Way is known as a Mars bar in the UK!

That's right. This Milky Way advert still shows in an abridged form on Challenge TV regularly.

They took out the 'drama' part of the advert where Red Car couldn't jump the bridge but the Blue Car could.

Making a drama out of an advert, lol.

I like Milky Ways but I prefer Double Deckers. When my brace comes off I will definitely have one of those.
