Subject: Milli Vanilli

Written By: nina on 03/30/06 at 4:02 pm

I never understood what all the hoopla was about just because Milli Vanilli lipsynced those songs. I mean, yeah, I guess they pulled the wool over everyone's eyes, but they were good looking and they could dance. It seemed to me that once the cat was out of the bag that they were treated like murders. Seriously, it's like Michael Jackson has been accused twice of child molestation and he still has sell out records and concerts, but Milli Vanilli lip synched and they were destroyed. Am I the only person in the world who didn't destroy my album of theres when this broke out. Do you think that has this not happend, that Rob would still be alive or do you think this lead to his suicide?

I think people just felt deceived, but, yeah, I tend to agree that too big a deal was made of it. The idea of combining good singers with eye candy is not unusual, but I guess this was just taking it a step too far. For example, C&C Music Factory used to feature models lip synching their stuff in videos and nobody seemed to care, because it was just a video. I think, for live performances, people feel cheated if they're not really getting the whole "live experience" though, so that's probably why it ended up as it did. It's a shame, really.

I don't know enough about Rob to judge if this woulda led to his suicide, but I doubt it helped him.

The media did crucify and treated them like pariahs. They were they bunt of every joke out there. I too still have my Milli Vanilli tape cassette which I consider a classic.  Looking back on it they just happened to fit the profile the producer wanted.  Some people are desperate for fame and fortune they would do anything for it as well as be part of a scam. If this happens again I think public would  be more forgiving. R.Kelly still has a child pornography case against him and he's still selling reccords and soldout concerts.  GO FIGURE >:(

I think the reason why is because they were caught at the Grammy's which was broadcast nationwide. There's no way they were getting away with it. Subsequently they had to give up their award. And yes I still have their album on cassette and cd. The fact is I don't care, there were 4 good songs on that album.

I think Milli Vanilli got what they deserved. They were scamming the public, and it was a deliberate ploy...

But then again many of today's pop stars do it - their audience knows it, but doesn't seem to mind. Apparently, actually singing your sings isn't that important these days. As long as you can dance ( :P :P).

I agree with ya.  So they didn't really sing on those songs.  Big deal.  The hits were still there, and they were quite catchy :)

I actually downloaded "Blame It on the Rain" for kicks. It shows some things from the late '80s sound more dated than others...the production is mega-corny, and the voices irritate me. I don't understand the whole hoopla about them or how they became so popular, anyway.

That was a great album. Too bad their scam couldnt have played out a few more years. No telling how many great songs they would have done.

Then you understand nothing about the group psychology of pop-culture... ;)
