Subject: Anyone actually like Hair Metal?

Written By: sonikuu on 04/08/06 at 4:15 pm

Does anyone else here like the hair bands of the 80's like Motley Crue, Skid Row, and all the rest?  While I was too young to actually remember the 80's, I was exposed to them thanks to my parents, who were really young when I was born toward the end of the 80's.  My mom in particular exposed me to a lot of the hair bands when I was a kid and, as a result, I just can't help but like them.

It seems though that most people seem to hate hair bands altogether.  I was wondering if there is anyone here who actually likes 80's hair bands?

I think a lot of people say they hate hair metal bands because it's like the "cool" thing to say, when they actually owned every hair metal  band album there was back in the day. ;)
Seriously, I was a total Duran Duran fan, and within one year, I stopped listening to them and focused all of my attention on big hair bands. Guns and Roses has to be one of the greatest bands of all time, and they were totally huge hair when they first came out. Re watch the Welcome to the Jungle Video- Axl's hair is way out there and Slash has so much hair... Poison was my favorite big hair band in the 80's and now I look at them and go...cheesy. I still like Warrant's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and Whitesnakes, "Here I Go Again."  Honestly, what I remember of big hair metal bands is that they weren't just hairy on top, but they all had hairy chest and there was too much hair. Uggh!!!

Yes, I stil like big hair metal because it defined who I was as a teenager and some of the songs are still pretty cool. :-[

One word....YES!  My kids were both born in the 80s so they grew up with it also. The both listen to 80s music today. They know songs when they hear them and can name off the bands. I grew up with Country Music parents and I hated it. At least my kids got to enjoy listening to the stereo in the car, unlike when I was a kid I hated being stuck listening to Country during car trips that took days!

Not really; I'm more of a New Wave/synth pop fan, but it's not as bad as everybody says it is.  Guns and Roses are okay.

This is my post from the "Hair Metal" post...

I like all kinds of music (except the cheesy bubble gum stuff).  Glam metal holds a dear place in my heart.  We have to accept it for what it is.  Good time party music that sounds really great turned up loud!

I recently made a couple of compilation CDs of this kind of music and burnt them for a few friends that enjoy this stuff.  The first one is called "Buzzard's Nest", named after a local record store that was geared toward rock fans.  The second is called "The Return Of Spuds Mackenzie."  Spuds was the king of his era and the "Original Party Animal" knew how to rock!

Buzzard's Nest
1.  Let It Rock - Bon Jovi
2.  Round And Round - Ratt
3.  Don't Treat Me Bad - Firehouse
4.  Summertime Girls - Y&T
5.  Wait For You - Bonham
6.  Don't Close Your Eyes - Dokken
7.  Heading For A Heartbreak - Winger
8.  Love And Affection - Nelson
9.  Nobody's Fool - Cinderella
10. Nothin' But A Good Time - Poison
11. Rainbow In The Dark - Dio
12. Uncle Tom's Cabin - Warrant
13. Jellyroll - Blue Murder
14. Fly High Michelle - Enuff Z'Nuff
15. 18 & Life - Skid Row
16. Coming Of Age - Darn Yankees
17. Home Sweet Home - M

Yes I did like the hair heavy metal bands from a distance. Except for Poison's first album I dont recall ever buying any other albums. No I'm wrong I did buy Bon Jovi and Guns & Roses. I know all the others I just tuned in to see their videos which was pretty cheesy for its time. The big hair, spandex tight pants, and some worn chaps. They all provided eye candy for the ladies and it worked because more girls came to their concerts. I was not a big fan of

Slaughter
L.A. Guns
Warrant
Winger
Whitesnake
Queensryche
Motley Crue  after 1986

I appreciate some of their music now but Im curious to see what members in each group didnt age well.
(except Motely Crue) :-[

I still listen online when my head feels like banging!

Sebastian Bach from Skid Row has aged very well . He still looks damn good. Long hair and all. Vince Neil  could stand to lose a little weight but is still cute and of course his voice will always be Crues sound.

What I was listening to on my CD player today . . .

"Right here, right now" - Van Halen
"Fallen angel" - Poison
"Down boys" - Warrant
"Crazy crazy nights" - KISS
"The Warrior" - Scandal

Not too sure the last one could be classed as Hair metal but I like it anyway.  :)

I can't believe I didn't reply here the first time around!

While I think the look and fashion of the hair bands is pretty stupid (even back then it probably was, LMAO) I love some of the songs. Usually the hit singles or the poppier, cleancut ones. The only one I knew about in the actual '80s was Bon Jovi, my mom liked them and I especially loved "Living on a Prayer". The rest I only learned about later on, but here's some of my favorites:

Living on a Prayer - Bon Jovi (the whole Slippery When Wet album and a few other singles)
Dude Looks Like a Lady - Aerosmith
Photograph - Def Leppard
Heaven - Warrant
Rock You Like a hurricane - Scorpions
Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
Forever - KISS
Round and Round - Ratt
Poison - Alice Cooper
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns and Roses
Miles Away - Winger

Those songs are just as much pop as metal (probably moreso even), and even though they're catchy as hell, for the most part I'm not a fan of the bands in general besides Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.

Then there's some stuff which I've seen classified as hair metal, but it's probably more pop/arena rock...which I like better. Stuff like "The Warrior" by Patty Smyth, Night Ranger (I love "When You Close Your Eyes"), Cheap Trick, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and stuff like that.

Of cause, I actually met my first real girlfriend at a Mötley Crüe concert in '88, very cool concert too, with Skid Row playing support

Mötley Crüe is probably my favorite band, but White Lion comes in a close second, the lead singer being Danish and all

LOVED this music!  I graduated high school in 1985, so I was really into it at just the right age. Their shows were ones I had to sneak to see...you know, telling Mom and Dad I'm staying over at someone's house then we go...like Def Leppard, Scorpions, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Queensryche, etc.  Some are not considered "hair bands", but the one thing they all had in common was that my parents did NOT want me listening to them!

Def Leppard is one of my all time favorites.  They're touring again with Poison and Cheap Trick.  I'm getting tickets for Tampa!!
