Subject: That's 80's (Songs)

Written By: T on 04/14/06 at 12:49 am

When I hear certain songs from the 80's, that song has a "that's 80's" something to it, like an 80's signature sound.
My list is:
Whitney Houston "How Will I Know"
              Stevie Nicks "Stand Back"
Deniece Williams "Let's Hear It From The Boy"
              Pointer Sisters "I'm So Excited"
              Modonna "Borderline"

And other songs too. Your list please?

"Let's Hear it For The Boy" though a tad overplayed really sums up the feel of the whole decade... totally agree!

... however this is for countries heavily influenced by the American charts. It's a real feelgood summer song. Places like the UK may not necessarily have had that same feel... weather being the main criteria...  ;D

Okay I think I made zero sense there.

On a personal note, Whitney's first two albums were also a big part of the 80s I know and love... especially the faster tracks.

I wouldn't call any *one* sound the "signature" 80s sound -- but I think what you're after in terms of subgenres is the Miami/Freestyle sound, and/or the Italo/Freestyle sound.

I have a hunch you'd *really* like anything done by "Company B", most noted for "Fascinated", "Full Circle", and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy".  Condense the beats and vocals into Deniece Williams and Madonna tracks down to their purest form, and you've got something so concentratedly freestyle that you can pretty much only play it in a club.  That's Company B in a nutshell :)

It's interesting to note that Hall and Oates's 'Out Of Touch' which has already been mentioned several times previously, didn't even chart in the UK top 40!

It's very rare that such a great tune that made US number#1 failed to even register on the UK top 40.  But the funny thing is, ask most UK 30 something-year-olds know 'Out Of Touch' well!

My choices for 80's signature tunes:

Relax - FGTH
Visage - Fade To Grey
Every Breath You Take - The Police
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
Falco - Rock Me Amadeus
The Reflex - Duran Duran
Freedom - Wham!
It's A Sin - Pet Shop Boys
Dangerous Game - Tommy Smith
Self Control - Laura Branigan
I Can't Go For That - Hall & Oates
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
Berlin - Take My Breath Away

Axel F - Harold Faltemeyer
Let's Hear It For The Boy - Deniece Williams
You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi
1999 - Prince

I like the choices I have seen, but I have to say that the music is different for everyone.

Some songs have been "flash frozen" into your brain because either the song was sort of obscure when you heard it and it just reminded you of what you were doing when you first heard it. My personal examples are "Lawyers In Love" by Jackson Browne reminds me of a road trip I took with my best friend. i heard this song for the 1st time that weekend and proceeded to hear it about 15 more times before the trip was over. Never heard it much after that.
A second song is "Everytime You Go Away" by Paul Young I heard for the first time after a high school friend's memorial service. One time was all it took. I still think about Teek whenever I hear that song.

On a cherrier note: Something About You-Level 42, Bad Boys-Gloria Estefan and Your Love- The Outfield remind me of my college softball days and the away games.
