Subject: The Cheesiest Music Videos of the 1980's

Written By: Electric Youth on 04/17/06 at 6:15 pm

Inpsired from another thread  :)  :D

'80's videos that were horribly cheesy:

Anything Journey
Anything Milli Vanilli
Anything New Kids on the Block
"Oh Sherrie" Steve Perry
"Heartbeat" Don Johnson
"Seventeen" Winger
That Billy Suier video where he dances around his room

That Billy Squier video where he dances around his room

That was 'Rock Me Tonite', which was also the song that killed his career ;D

Here's a few that only my fellow Canadians will know about ...

Just Like You by FM (lead singer Nash the Slash, all wrapped in bandages, playing guitar and singing new wave) ;D
Flippin' to the A Side by Cats Can Fly
Too Bad by Doug and the Slugs (a weird twist on suicide) ;D
MAkin' it Work by Doug and the Slugs

I'll start by saying the two I mentioned in the other thread:

Glen Medieros - Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You

and

Lionel Richie - Hello

Very VERY cheesy!

Loverboy by Billy Ocean

Torture by The Jacksons (Can You Feel It is also pretty cheesy!)

Heartbeat by Don Johnson

All pretty cheesy  videos!  ;D

Sorry, but Lionel takes this crown hands down with his performance in 'Hello'.

You just gotta love that bit when he's on the phone calling her, she answers, and he says 'Hello....'

Classic!!  :D

This morning on VH1 Classic I saw Rod Stewart's video for "Some Guys have all the Luck" and it was very cheesey. I also saw one a few weeks ago that was for a Rick Springfield song and it was in a spaceship. That was probably the cheesiest.

I think alot of the Heavy-Metal or Pop-Metal videos were definitely cheesy. The over-the-top smoke filled room, laser lighting, huge stage but no audience, close-ups on lead singers less on the other musicians, and sometimes  alot of pyrotechnics. Some of the outfits they were I swear I think they all shopped at the same store or borrowed each other's clothes. Of course the gratitious hot girlfriend that had to be in the videos as well. Here's my list of artists who made some cheesy videos

Whitesnake
Motely Crue
Warrant
Bon Jovi
Wasp
Judas Priest
Def Leppard
Europe
Scorpians

The Synth-New Wave groups are just too easy to make in fun of. I think we know they wear the crown for being cheesy.

"Good bye to You" by Scandal-  way too much smiling and cheesy playing to the camera. Patti fired the band after this album.

"Feet Don't Fail me Now" by Utopia  - overplayed on MTV.  All the band dressed up as centipedes with a background that looked like it was drawn with magic markers.

OK, here's Hawk's Next 5 Cheesiest Videos From the '80s:

5. Any video which borrows clips from films (c'mon, people! Can't you afford at least a CHEESY director?!?)
4. Der Kommissar- Falco's version (I liked Falco, but that video was just a touch much.)
3. Small Town Boy- The Bronski Beat (That looked as if it was filmed in a YMCA!)
2. Young Girls In Love- Loverboy (Good song, bad video.)

AND! The Provolone Award Goes To:
1. Wrapped Around Your Finger- The Police (Great hit, but what was up with all those candles?????)

Cheesy videos would also include:

Grim Reaper's "See You In Hell"
Culture Club's "Time"- I believe that's the one where the band are pieces in a giant board game?
Thomas Dolby's "Hyperactive!"- Fabumondo song; cheesy video.
Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door"- Again great song, but c'mon, Pete! Commit to trying!
Michael Jackson's "Rock With You"- Did anyone else have an epileptic fit, from the background neon lasers?

There's more, I'm sure, but I'm tired.

Was it the part where he was the ventriloquist, and the dummy's head fell out?

Elton John's "I'm Still Standing"- He was potted when he filmed that video! That's why it was cheesy.

Here's a cheeseball video: "Vacation", by the Go-Go's. What was with the waterskiing bit?

I think it was the part where Thomas and the old guy were trying to come up with some things to go with the images (i.e Bacon and Pig) and the part that made them laugh was when Thomas and the old man came up with something to match the word "melons"

I prefer their version to the original.  Given that they had a reasonably short timescale to do the song and video I think it works quite well.  It looks like two mates having a good crack, as I suspect they were.

Captain Lou Albano
Rowdy Roddy Piper
Classy Freddy Blassie (r.i.p.)

You poor chillun STILL haven't learned, yet. Tsk, tsk.

Haven't you understood that the cheesiest video of the 1980s is:

"I Wanna Dance With Somebody", by Whitney Houston!!!!!

-She has this smile plastered on her face, as if she did about 20 lbs. of cocaine, then were dropped off on Bora Bora, and told she she'll die of extreme diarrhea of the mouth, and all she can say is "I wanna dance with somebody!"

Did anyone understand why she was dressed as a poor imitation of Dolly Parton, from the '9 To 5 & Odd Jobs' LP cover? And let's be honest, the song was just fluff. The video was fluff. Whitney Houston's career was just fluff. (Rather fitting, when you consider the fact that she's a crack-ho, now.)

Yep, that was back in the 'Rock and Wrestling' connection around the time Wrestlemania started in 1985. I guess for promoting herself at the first Wrestlemania, she had to return the favour by sticking all these wrestlers on her video.

Both Lauper and Captain Lou are interesting characters. More than meets the eye. It seems like in the mid-'80s, "pro-wrestling" was much more tongue-in-cheek, which went right along with Cyndi's schtick. She and Captain Lou were good friends.

I'm a fan of Cyndi, but the infernal yelping she does throughout the "Goonies" song is just too cacaphonous, even for me!

(Natcherly, Wendi & Cyndi won.)
