Subject: Obscure Songs From the '80s

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 04/20/06 at 5:06 am

What's the most obscure song from the '80s you can remember? Let's stretch ourselves, shall we?

I'll begin, with "Boot To the Head", by Tae Kwan Leap.
Next?

i'd have to go with the buffy song and i don't even know who sang it.  i only heard it once, but it stuck in my head:

buffy, buffy come back to me,
why'd you have to go and o.d.?
what about uncle bill and mrs beasely?

that part was sung to the family affair theme!

If I had to pick 5 out of my archives, I'd go with:

"Yon Yonson" - Dave Howard Singers (1987)
"Amok" - Ledernacken (1987)
"Baby Judy" - The Hawaiian Pups (1983)
"Get Out Of London" - Intaferon (1983)
"Russian Roulette" - Zinno (1989)

(And I second the nominations for "Candy Bar Express" and "Norman Bates")

Platinum Blonde.  Their only charting single in the American Hot 100 was "Somebody Somewhere".  They had like a near dozen hits here in Canada

Shaun Brown, that is.  Thanks for the excuse to transcribe!

Obligatory obscure track:  The 12" remix of Rappin' Duke, which featured a whole 'nother pile of lyrics.

OK I have an obscurity: The guy who played Carlton on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" had a minor hit record in 1985 -- a song called "Dance Baby."  Has anyone hear this?

There's also a record called "Tommy Judy and Me" that I had forgotten about, but was mentioned on a Web site: www.lost80smusic.net. It's at the very end. (Or do a Google search for the artist, Rob Hegel.)

Are you sure you are not thinking of the Frantics? They had 2 "Boot to the Head" songs-the second one was "Boot to the Head: Tae Kwan Leap" (BTW, I have copies of both of these.  :D ;D ;D )

You wouldn't happen to be from Cleveland, would you?  I remember that song as a B-I-G hit there in the fall of '80.  I wish I knew where to get that damn song on CD.  I actually liked it.  Good choice there, Webstor!

"1-800" by Police Dogs. (Who I think was actually Doctor Demento in disguise.) A tribute to 1-800 commercials. Ginzu knives and such. Wish I could find out more about the song. Weird Al played the video when he hosted MTV once. (Anyone remember this? Have any information on it?)

"Get on the Bus" by the Royal Crescent Mob from their Land of Sugar EP. Sounded great if you sped up the pitch on your turntable a bit.

...will think of more later.

You know, some ppl don't know what make a song "obscure":

Obscure- According to Webster's New Universal, it means not well-known or uncommon.

If this is the case, I'm sure we ALL know of 'obscure' songs from our faves, man!

One of my personal fave bands is the Tubes (She's A Beauty, Talk To Ya Later)
An 'obscure' song from them, would be something like "Wild Women Of Wongo", for example.

I can't remember the name of a particular song...but how about Charlie Sexton?

He put record out in 1985 at the age of 16

Here are a few  . . .

"It's 'orrible being in love (when you're eight and half)" - Claire and Friends
"Geil" - Bruce and Bongo
"Disco Band" - Scotch
"Rain in May" - Max Werner

Three of the four didn't make it into the top 20 in Britain or the US.

Not quite as obscure as I thought, lol.

The song cracks me up bigstyle and probably one of the few I wouldn't want to be caught listening to.

Well, for starters, there's the mysterious female version of "Every Day" from 1981 that I don't know anything else about.

And this song I just recently discovered. It probably wasn't a hit in the US, but maybe in Europe....

"Seven tears, are flowing to the ri-ver
seven tears, are running to the sea
If one day, they reach some distant wa-ters,
then you'll know, they're sent with love from me."

Yep. 'Seven tears' by The Goombay Dance Band. I loved the song but the video was downright depressing to watch as it featured old film clips of people crying and water images.

Yeah, I love it too but it didn't enter the UK charts and I don't think it entered the US Top 30 either.

It didn't enter the US Hot 100 or the Canadian Top 100 at all.  It might have been a minor hit in the UK.  IT seems like the kind of song that would make an appearance on the UK charts :)

songs with synths and good melodies are usually the kinds of songs that seemed to be popular in the UK.  They never did any damage on the charts over here  :\'(

How about the one song of Rockwell's that never got very far..."Genie Of Love"?
I understand that Christina Aguilera's writer for "Genie In A Bottle" used that as a partial inspiration.

Dr. Demento material--
Bobby Jimmy & the Critters also did "Big Butt"

"Went to a game to see the L.A. Raiders,
Couldn't get out of those little elevators,'
I was workin' real hard, I was trying my part,
When all of a sudden, I think I had to...
Go eat a hot dog!"

Then there's "Rappin' The Bear", from Tri-5.

This is a Holiday song about Teddy Ruxpin.
Let's just say Teddy isn't quite what you think he is...

"Hey, don't talk to me like that! I'm a very expensive teddy bear! If you don't stop it, I'm gonna tell your kids dirty jokes!"
