My favourite of all time was Fantastic by Wham!, which still remains my favourite album of the 80's 8)

Five Star "Luxury of Life"... 10 totally catchy well written hits and no fillers. They pretty much keep to that same standard to this day. Pure quality.

I would say The Cars self-titled debut, but that came out in '78. Maybe the Smith's debut...

Definitely!!!!!! My faves? Hell, all of them, though I tend to love "All Fall Down" and "Let Me Be The One" more.

What about this one?

Here's a few more from me ...

THE CHURCH (1982)

http://homepage.mac.com/fipster/church/images/albums/church-us.jpg

This was the North American version of their Australian 1981 debut 'Of Skins and Heart' (which had a different album sleeve).  I don't know how well it performed Stateside, but it reached #31 in Canada despite no singles reaching the mainstream.  It is best remembered for the single The Unguarded Moment which was a #22 hit in their native Australia.

ABC - THE LEXICON OF LOVE (1982)

http://assets.thequietus.com/images/articles/1104/Lexicon_Of_Love_1234189181_crop_350x350.jpg

A #1 album in their native UK and spawned 4 UK Top 20 hits.  It reached #3 in Canada, and though it didn't champion their UK success, it gave them something in Canada that eluded them in the UK:  A #1 single with 'The Look of Love'.  ABC get my vote (still) as the greatest band of the 80s.

Somehow I missed this old thread...

  Business As Usual (1981)

I pretty much went nuts over this debut album.  Still a favorite of mine, today, along with Cargo.  BAU is a "desert island" album...

Cyndi came along in time to help make music unusual.  Heavy rotation on MTV and radio.  Never owned any of her albums...

Likewise the Go-Gos.  I dig them more now than back then...

Sade is good to go NOW.  In the day she was a tad too adult contemporary for my liking...

  Too Fast For Love (1981)

  http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1193336/motley_crue_too_fast_for_love.jpg

I don't recall getting behind many debut albums back then.  One which struck a mighty chord with me (like Business As Usual) was the Crue's debut, but I didn't discover it until a couple of years after it's release.  They're young and hungry and the sound is raw, rough and unpolished.  Everything came together with Shout, took a turn for the commercial with Theatre, then got ridiculous by the time Feelgood came around.  I'll always love TFFL...

That is a wicked album, one that took me a while to appreciate because for the longest time, I couldn't stand 'Be Good Johnny'.  Chartwise, the song did nothing in the US Hot 100, but was a Top 40 hit in Canada and was greatly overplayed.  I now appreciate it and even put 'Be Good Johnny' in my 80s playlist on my ZUNE 8)

If you'll pardon the expression...to hell with the US Hot 100...

The only songs I remember being overplayed were two particular singles.  Had no MTV at the time so I caught these two singles exclusively on the radio.  Actually a friend of mine sorta half-assed acted out "Who Can It Be Now" for me on the school bus...

Standout track - "Down by the Sea"

Took a few years to figure out exactly what Vegemite was... ???

I would be so remiss if I left out this classic!

Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Way It Is

"Mandolin Rain" is one of the most romantic songs of the 80's, while "Every Little Kiss" still gets me tapping my feet. And one shouldn't forget the album tracks like "Down The Road Tonight" and "The River Runs Low". Sheer musical excellence.

Your Pal,
Doc

The Lexicon of Love by ABC was a cracking debut album, with plenty of catchy pop songs. "Hunting High and Low" by A-ha would be another good example (although I stand corrected if it isnt A-Ha's debut)  :)

It wasn't a bad album, but when I think 80s music, that isn't one of the albums that comes to mind
