Nah, Saxophones were popular in the 70's with artists like Gerry Rafferty

With the Saxophone created in 1842, the instrument first reached its popularity in the 1930s and in the early 20th century the Vatican officially condemned the instrument.

In the 80's, I believe it was Glenn Frey who re-popularized the saxophone.  Billy OCean, Dan Fogelberg and Huey Lewis all used Saxophones in many of their songs :)

It strikes me as a late '80s cheesy top 40 thing...but saxophones were very much a '70s rock instrument (see: Joni Mitchell, Carole King, any funk or disco.)

But the 90s were the saxophonists decade... Kenny G and Dave Koz. Rare to have instrumentals in the charts.
