Subject: THE Song of the '80s

Written By: velvetoneo on 05/14/06 at 1:43 pm

What song to you exemplifies everything about the decade, both in terms of musical production and in terms of the lyrics and "theme" of the song?

I'm going to say 1984's "Material Girl" by Madonna.

I guess it depends by genre a little bit, but mostly going with pop/Top 40, if I had to pick 10 songs to play for someone totally unfamilar with '80s music to get a feel for everything about the era, I'd probably say:

1983: Beat It/Billie Jean/Thriller - Michael Jackson
1983: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
1982: Gloria - Laura Branigan
1985: Take On Me - A Ha
1984: Jump - Van Halen
1985: You Belong to the City - Glenn Frey (just being in Miami Vice is enough) ;)
1984: Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
1984: Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - WHAM
1985: I Wanna Know What Love is - Foreigner
1979: Video Killed the Radio Star - Buggles (okay, technically a '70s song in date, but VERY '80s in sound, as well as the lyrics, which are very appropriate for MTV's video age that soon followed)

Gloria - Laura Branigan

This song is '80s in every way.
