I really don't think Madonna is all that cheesy. More a genius of pop marketing. I've always thought that Madonna defied 1983ish culture in a way, by being ironic and postmodern rather than campy, which was the dominant stance at the time.

I agree. In fact the biggest mistake to make when assessing 'cheese' is to include too many pop acts who do not deserve the tag.

Pop music is exactly that, music in it's own right and I get quite upset seeing decent pop acts get labelled as Cheesy. In some respects, this killed off the more genuine pop acts totally.

Who do I blame?  Ignorant modern media, that's who.

Come on people, polished acts like A-ha are NOT cheesy, neither are Duran Duran, Talk Talk, Prince or Madonna - and how the heck Gary Numan can be categorised as cheesy when he's been a punk rocker for most of his career is beyond me!  ???

Give credit to the proper Pop acts that had a touch of quality about them.  Who knows, perhaps over the course of the next 20 years the word 'pop' will be phased out totally and replaced by 'cheese'....

Yeah, like everything that's either dramatic or not totally subdued is cheesy.
