He is amazing. "Falling in Love Again"'s video is probably my all-time favorite campy German video.

For those unfamiliar, Klaus Nomi was a German-born emigre who had an act that consisted of cabaret schtick, electro-disco, and melodramatic falsetto vocals. He put out a few records in the early '80s, minor *novelty* hits with covers of Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me," and of "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" Sadly, Nomi died of AIDS in 1983.
Nomi had a following in the New York City area and among the gay community (at least members of the gay community who dug his brand of schtick!)  Nomi reminds me of somebody who would have been affiliated with film-maker John Waters. Though he wasn't, I'm sure John was a fan!
A real sour note rang out posthumously when Rush Limbaugh started using Nomi's rendition of "You Don't Own Me" to introduce his gay-bashing segments. Oh well, we ridicule in others what we fear most in ourselves, 'nuff said!

The "Falling in Love Again" video was banned in the U.S. for its "ice cream cone" sequence and fellatio on a light saber, which you can probably imagine. One of his songs, "You Don't Own Me", was #1 on the "gayest songs of all time list." It's a shame Rush used somebody so creative for his gay-bashing segments.

I recently saw an indie documentary on Klaus Nomi (aka Klaus Sperber).

I was quite amazed at some of the ingenuity he used to make his shows as dramatic as he did. Not to mention his appearance on URGH!- A Music War, of which I have a personal copy. (The good one, with all the trimmings, not the edited one.)
