Subject: Are the '80s the Least Vulgar Decade?

Written By: Donnie Darko on 07/13/06 at 2:46 am

Aside from B-horror movies and things like that there wasn't very much gore and grossness in the '80s, compared to the '60s, '70s, '90s, and '00s. There was some violence in the '80s, but it wasn't usually graphic or gritty.

In terms of violence, yes. In terms of sex, no.

80s action movies are probably as violent as 70s or 90s movies, but I think the television stations were slightly more conservative in the 80s when it came to sex, vulgarity, violence.etc on television. In some ways, I think we're seeing a return to that.

I disagree.  Plenty of '80s films are every bit as graphic and gross as the ones made during the heydey of early '70s 'grindhouse' flicks (Last House on the Left for example) and the ultra-gory stuff nowadays like Saw and The Hills Have Eyes remake.  Don't forget the '80s was the video revolution when every Joe Schmo was trying to get their film out.  The early '80s also saw SOV (shot-on-video) films being released by the dozens.  These schlocky, porno-budgeted films loaded on the gore and exploitation aspect to make up for a lack of production value and real talent.  Exploitation films like Ms. 45 relesed in 1981 about a woman being raped twice in the opening 15 mins and then seeking her revenge on innocent men, and the 1984 Linda Blair vehicle Savage Streets - which deals with similar rape/revenge themes - are some of the most excessive, exploitive and vulgar non-horror films of the 1980's.  As far as gross-out/sex-filled comedies go, this type of film was pretty much born in the '80s with movies like Porky's and The Last American Virgin and I will admit that nowadays some of them are far more gratuitous and definitely push the envelope but that's to be expected.  In 20 years time today's films will seem tame by comparison, too.  That is inevitable.

But I will say in terms of music/lyrics, the '90s and today definitely has the '80s beat in terms of vulgarity.
