Subject: Action Figures of the 80s

Written By: whistledog on 09/29/06 at 8:14 pm

The term "Action Figure" was coined in 1964 by Hasbro for G.I. Joe, but really, the action figure was best seen in the 80s.  What were some of your favourite action figures?  Which ones did you own?

My all-time favourite was "Thunder Punch" He-Man.  You put red caps in his backpack, and when you twisted him, he would punch with a big BOOM! 8)

I had most of the He-Man figures.  The one I didn't really like was Modulok because the pieces were easy to lose

I had alot of those Super Powers figures (Batman, Superman, etc ...) but stupidly when I was younger, I sold the whole box of them in a yard sale for 3$ so I could buy baseball cards

Boba Fett
Complete with the dogdick-looking rocket pack

There's actually a discrete "Boba Fett Fan Club" online.

I didn't really have a favorite, however, I would always play G.I. Joe with this kid on the bus, back in elementary school. :D

This is such a broad genre for me so I'll highlight bits and pieces. Yes I have an inner geek inside.

Ultimate action figure line... Star Wars closely followed by GI Joe.

Fave Joes... Zartan and the Dreadnoks

Fave Star Wars... all the ewoks

First He-man figure was Stratos (my bro got He-man and my sis got Teela the same day)

Fave Thundercat figure was Panthro... notice how Lion-O wasn't as nicely sculpted as the rest.

Embarassing admission... I always wanted the Care Bear poseable action figures.

What I wanted but never got... Mego Planet of The Apes (spillover from the 70s).

Other quirky figures I loved... Dungeons & Dragons, A-team, Rambo, Ghostbusters, Terrahawks, Fisher Price Adventure People to name a few.

What I collect now... Star wars vintage, Asterix, Planet of the Apes Medicom

^ I forgot about the Ghostbusters action figures.  They came with packs that you snapped on their back, and had a gun with plastic twirly sticks that looked like rays.  I had Egon and Peter 8)

I used to own Skeletor and Stinkor of the He-man range.

I think Stinkor was he-man anyway.

I also loved to collect little plastic soldiers and set up a battlefield.

I had my favourite soldiers from all collections and have a super platoon.

My platoon was based on "tour of duty" the war series in the 80's based on a platoon of US soldiers in Vietnam.

As a child in the eighties action figures were a status symbol in my neighborhood. The more you had, the more rich\popular you were. My favorite were the Star Wars and GI Joe figures. But the ultimate were Transformers.

OMG! :o  I remember getting a pack of those in a grocery store toy section as a part of my birthday gift. They didn't seemed to last long though.

I actually run a Website dedicated to action figures of the 1980s. It has a gallery of pics for many different figure lines that were released back in the day. Check it out at Action Figure Archive

Ah yes!  I remember scoring Boba with the mail-in offer in '79.  We really didn't know what to do with him since we didn't know just who the hell he was.  Sure was cool, though..!

Can't begin to convey my disappointment when I learned that the rocket didn't fire...

Heh, yeah...among my gang it was keep-up with the Jones'.  It was crazy...

Unless it's one of those (Real) Barbie (Doll) collections- that's seems like a fun collection to have!  :D ;D
