Subject: Name this play that aired on HBO in the 80's

Perhaps you guys could help me figure out the name of this HBO play that was aired in the 80's. The play consisted of only 1 actor in the whole play and he was in his apartment playing various instruments and singing songs, he was going to be married soon and was having regrets, his fiance broke up with him and his landlord evicted him when he got a call from a friend who was in a famous band and they needed a drummer, he auditioined over the phone and they hired him on the spot. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?
A couple of more clues: There was a song where he played bass called "Rock and Roll will never die". He was looking through his yearbook when he saw the message from the bandmate that was in the famous band saying never give up playing the drums. Etc.
