Subject: do you guys remember people wearing PONCHOS in the 80s ?

My older sister had this friend, in highschool, in about 1987. He was a kind of a burn out, but a MAJOR cutie. I remember he used to wear this poncho, and I had never seen a poncho before. I don't remember the details -- but now I TOTALLY want an 80s poncho!! Does anyone have any pictures or any examples of what to look for? What style of ponchos were trendy back then?

They were big in the sixties. Ones that looked like Native American Blankets

I vaguely remember what you're talking about and can't remember what they were called. I don't think they were called ponchos but something else.
They were around in the late '80s and very early 90's maybe.

I remember the poncho fad of the 80s. Both my sisters had one. We called them ponchos.
And just to add, ponchos made a comeback in the UK in 2003.

oh...do you mean the ones that were like um....woven...looked like they were made of hemp or something? I remember those kind being popular in the early 90's.

Here's a pic of the classic 80s pancho. It always had to be knitted with bright pastel colours.

ps. the first poncho i found so far is woven, rough, and is pink and black stripes.. seems KIND of 80's but not quite there.
i need to find some cool 80's boots too!! but maybe i'll post another thread...

I didn't read your first post clearly at first. I didn't realise you were looking for a guy's poncho. My pics were ponchos for little girls... ;D
But in 2003, the ponchos that were in fashion were worn by males. They didn't have tassles on and they weren't colourful or knitted like the 80s ones. They normally had hoods as well like so...

I know what you're talking about...
I don't remember them so much as ponchos, but heavy, hooded, cable knit, multi color pullovers with a drawstring and kangaroo pocket (<--?). I had bought one in Europe in the late eighties and I know they were popular in the U.S. Just go to any mall, they were everywhere...
