Subject: Two Hit Wonders of the 80s

Written By: whistledog on 12/31/06 at 5:13 pm

"A two-hit wonder is an artist, unlike a one-hit wonder, that has two major hit singles before fading into obscurity".  They aren't usually defined by country, but they should be as some artists are more successful in diffrent countries.

Here's a bunch of Two Hit Wonders that were popular in Canada ...

Amazulu - Montego Bay / Don't You Just Know It
Big Bam Boo http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Shooting From My Heart / If You Could See Me Now
Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene / It Doesn't Have to Be This Way
Body Elecric http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Do You Think They Can Tell? / Strangers in Love
Boys Brigade http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Passion of Love / Melody
Charlene - I've Never Been to Me / Used to Be <w/ Stevie Wonder>
Darkroom http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - In Dim Light / San Paku
Indio http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Hard Sun / Save For the Memory
Jato http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - She's Got / Lake of Fire
Jenson Interceptor http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Tiny Thing / Heavenly Angels
Johanssen http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Walkin A Fine Line / Here We Go Again
Laid Back - White Horse / Sunshine Reggae
Lipps Inc - Funkytown / How Long
Matt Bianco - Whose Side Are You On? / Yeh Yeh
Musical Youth - Pass the Dutchie / She's Trouble
Myles Goodwyn http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Do You Know What I Mean <w/ Lee Aaron> / My Girl
Nick Lowe - Cruel to Be Kind / Stick it Where the Sun Don't Shine
Opus - Live is Life / Up and Down
Roger Hodgson - Had A Dream / You Make Me Love You
Sheriff http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - You Remind Me / When I'm With You
Surrender http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - It's All Been Done Before / Start Again
T'Pau - Heart and Soul / China in Your Hand
Taco - Puttin on the Ritz / Singin in the Rain
Trans X http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Vivre Sur Video (Living on Video) / Message on the Radio
Truth - Exception of Love / Weapons of Love
Tu http://www.geocities.com/godeltsihw/canada.PNG - Stay With Me / The Language of Love

Only one that comes to mind right now is

Rockwell ("Somebody's Watching Me", "Obscene Phone Caller")

Cool list, Whistledog!

Some of those red ones were more failed follow-ups than hits, IMO.

Not to nit pick, but "Cruel to be Kind" was a hit in 1979.  I suppose you could carry it over into 1980.
Laid Back's "Keep Smiling" is worth seeking out.  It's one of the cheesiest records ever made!
Several times I have nominated Charlene's "I've Never Been To Me" as the worst song ever.  Haven't changed my mind!

Don't forget:
EBN-OZN: A-E-I-O-U Sometimes Y/Bag Lady (I Wonder)
Limahl: Neverending Story/Only For Love
Shriekback:* Hand on My Heart/Get Down Tonight
Planet P Project: Why Me?/Static on the Radio
Wall of Voodoo: Mexican Radio/Call of the West**

*not quite fair as band achieved indie rock/college radio stardom without Top 40 success.
**The other Wall of Voodoo hit could be "The Far Side of Crazy," however, TFSOC was recorded after the "Mexican Radio" line-up broke up when Stan Ridgeway left.

Good one!!!

I was thinking Staci Q "Two of Hearts" & "We Connect"

Both songs are so similar that usually when one is playing; I sing the chorus of the other one.  You should try it sometime.......

I was gonna suggest Honeymoon Suite but I think they were more than a two hit wonder..

I know they had New Girl Now and Feel it again. But then I think they released Bad Attitude.

They had 4 US hits:  New Girl Now (US #57, 1984), Feel it Again (US #34, 1986), What Does it Take (US #52, 1986), Love Changes Everything (US #91, 1988).  They did better in Canada with around 15 or so hits

I guess they disqualify then as a two hit wonder then.

"Amazulu - Montego Bay / Don't You Just Know It

Oddly enough, neither of those were hits in The Netherlands - but "Excitable" and "Too Good To Be Forgotten" were (which makes them.... a two hit wonder).

Matt Bianco - Whose Side Are You On? / Yeh Yeh

They had 6 Top 40 hits over here, "More Than I Can Bear" being the biggest (reaching #22).

Musical Youth - Pass the Dutchie / She's Trouble

I don't know "She's Trouble" , but we had "The Youth Of Today" and "Tell Me Why" for follow ups.

Nick Lowe - Cruel to Be Kind / Stick it Where the Sun Don't Shine

His only Dutch Top 40 hit in the 1980s was "Half A Boy And Half A Man".

Roger Hodgson - Had A Dream / You Make Me Love You

"Had A Dream" did make it to Dutch Top 40...but only just! It peaked at #39.

I am glad that song was a Top 40 hit somewhere.  It's quite catchy :)

Indeed it is. Quite different from his 1970s songs (like "I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass").

btw: "Half a Boy And Half a Man" hit #6.
