Subject: 25 Years Ago Thread

Written By: cinnabon on 09/29/07 at 6:59 pm

I admit it, I borrowed the idea from Whistledog's 20 Years Ago Thread!

TV Shows We Said Hello to
Cheers
Family Ties
Gloria (spin off of Archie Bunker's Place)
People's Court
The New $25,000 Pyramid (bigger and better version of $10,000 Pyramid from the 70s)
Knight Rider
The Weather Channel debuted on cable
Newhart
Fame
Joanie Loves Chachi

TV Shows We Said Goodbye to
Barney Miller
Mork and Mindy
Password Plus
Blockbusters
Bosom Buddies

Diet Coke and Chicken McNuggets made their grand debuts.

Music wise, many people were hearing bands like Missing Persons, Culture Club, ABC, and Haircut 100 for the first time; also, MTV started their famous ad campaign
" I want my MTV!"

I just remembered - the very first Trivial Pursuit game rolled out a quarter of a century ago!  ;)

Also, Square Pegs premiered 25 years ago.  :)

I loved (or liked) just about all the shows that premiered that year, except for the Weather Channel.  :D

Excellent year for TV debuts.  Newhart alone made 1982 one of the best years of the 80s 8)

more music greats from 1982 ...

♦ Steve Winwood had a Top 40 hit in Canada with one of my most favourite songs ever ... 'Valerie'

♦ Melissa Manchester had her final Top 40 hit (in both the U.S. and Canada) with the excellent 'You Should Hear How She Talks About You' which has one of the best sax solos ever

♦ The Jam had their first and only (Top 40) hit in Canada with 'Town Called Malice'

♦ OMD had their first Top 40 hit in Canada with 'Joan of Arc'

♦ The Human League had their first U.S. and Canadian Top 40 hit with 'Don't You Want Me'

♦ The classic 'Da Da Da' by Trio is a Top 5 hit in both the UK and Canada

♦ Mike Oldfield breaks out of one hit wonder status in Canada as 'Family Man' sneaks into the Top 30

♦ Nick Lowe scores his 2nd and final Canadian Top 40 hit with 'Stick it Where the Sun Don't Shine'

♦ Mike Rutherford follows Genesis bandmate Phil Collins into the solo world, reaching #39 in Canada with the song 'Maxine'

♦ Steve Perry has his first solo hit in a duet with Kenny Loggins on 'Don't Fight It'

I guess it depends on which region of the country you live in; I remember Mcdonald's started selling McNuggets in Wisonsin in the spring of 82; incidentally, I saw on the History Channel where they also started selling the McRib sandwich sometime in the early 80s but but I don't think the Mickey D's in the midwest had them until well into the 90's.  :)

Allen Ludded had to leave Password Plus in October 1980 due to complications he was having due to medication he was taking for stomach cancer (although many people believe he had a stroke); at that point Tom Kennedy took over as host until the show's cancellation in March 1982.

I also forgot to mention before that Match Game was also taken off the air around the same time that year (RIP Brett and Charles) :\'(

Who can forget the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville Tennessee?!!  All of my extended family lived in Knoxville,  so I went to the fair at least a dozen times.  I remember the deely bobbers (the headband with the spiral wires and foam shapes on the end. )  Mine had the World's Fair flames on the ends.  I spent most of my time in the Pac-Man tent, playing "Kick", which I still have never seen in any arcade.   I had Pac Man shoe strings, stuffed toys, a Pac Man rubik's cube, a Pac Man sliding tile game, etc.,  all from the tent at the World's Fair.

Knoxville has been celebrating the 25th anniversary of the fair this whole year.  memorabilia from the fair gets sold for lots of money,  if you know where to sell it.

What a stunning / shocking / sad piece of news was that at the time ? My tennis hero ... gone forever. Couldn't believe he wasn't there at the 1982 final, having made the previous 6. Wimbledon committee  has a lot to answer for there. They refused him a wildcard ... he'd not played sufficient tournaments, I believe. Given that he'd beaten Connors twice in the finals (the eventual champ) who beat the guy who'd beaten him the previous year (McEnroe) ..... you gotta think Borg was a great chance to win a 6th Wimbledon. We'll never know now, thanks to those jerks ! I think their snubbing of him precipitated his shock retirement !

I do happen to know that a handful of my high school classmates had moved out of state after graduating (including a buddy of mine who I'd known since junior high; I still keep in touch with him through email; I know he moved to Phoenix in 2005), which is probably why there were less than a hundred people at my 10 year reunion last June.

Wooooow, 1984.  Well let's see.  It's a long list.  I remember 1984 very well, and I was 7 at the time.  i was in a foster home getting treated like that girl from Mommy Dearest.  Michael Jackson was all over the place.  I remember that old lady from the Wendy's commercial saying "Where's the Beef?"  I took a picture with Santa Claus, thinking he's real.  I remember when the Snorks first came out, and I think that they were nothing but a rip-off of the Smurfs.  I remember watching peopke breakdance and pop lock in the block.  I remember Jesse Jackson talking running for president.  I remember that short gymnast name Mary Lou Retton.  I remember singing GHOSTBUSTERS along with Ray Parker Jr.  1984 was the 80s wrapped in one year.  1984 was SOOOOO 80s culture driven.  I remember when Beat Street first came out, and we will sing the theme song of that movie.  I remember Breakin.  I remember all this when I was 7 years old.

I used to bring cupcakes and milk as well.  The reason why I said "thinking he's real" because when you're young, you believe in Santa Claus.  Like every other child, I used to think he's real, but when you get older, you realize that's he's fantasy.

The first exposure I had to that game was in mid-1990, when I went over to a friend's house. I could barely get the hang of the game at first, but when I played the Game Boy version of it several months later, I became quite good at it!

I had a job bagging groceries at a supermarket.  School was over, so I didn't have to deal with same azzwholes day after day.  Soon you figure you have do that with work.  It's not as bad as school, but there was a bullying mentality about the place.

There was LIVE AID.  There was great concern among everybody about Ethiopa.  LIVE AID was quite marginal.  It barely made a dent in the debt Ethiopa owed.  It was great for all the artists involved.

I think David Gilmour met Jon Carin at LIVE AIDE.

;D

Depeche Mode's "People Are People" was a hit in the summer of '85.  I had been listening to DM since September of 1984.  Interesting to be able to pin down something like that!  I remembered and ad I'd seen in Billboard about hot new English bands.  One day I recognized the Depeche Mode from the ad that had already given me Aztec Camera and Prefab Sprout.  I bought the "People Are People" US cassette, and never looked back.  I bought all the back catalog stuff I could find, then I eagerly awaited every new release.  My enthusiasm died back while they were making "Violator."

Of course, I wasn't using computers much in the 80's anyway. I didn't start using 'em until the late 80's, when I was in 3rd grade. Those were the Apple II-e's. The first-ever exposure I had to any Microsoft Windows operating system was sometime in the mid-90's... but I caught on pretty quick.

Some of my memories of July 1986 include getting together with my friends and their moms once a week to go out to various places around the L.A. area, including museums, parks, and beaches. This date (July 3rd) was a Thursday, and we probably went somewhere on this date (since Thursdays were our get-together days), but I cannot quite remember where we went. Could've been Griffith Park; I'm not exactly certain.

(When I have an opportunity, I'll scan some pics.) By the way, I remember all of my birthdays beginning with this one (that is, how I spent the actual day).

Wow now this is the Hollywood Squares I remember.

The same for me. I know that its original incarnation began in 1965 with host Peter Marshall and had a long run... but I wasn't too familiar with that one. The first one I remember is the one that ran in the late 1980's with host John Davidson (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090452/), which is in my previous post on this thread. Then much later was the Tom Bergeron version, which ran from 1998-2004.

Also, I remember that while John Davidson was the emcee of the 80's version, sometimes Jim J. Bullock would be a guest host and Davidson would be one of the celebrities in a square! He would often complain about his name being misspelled (as "Davison") on the nameplate; Bullock would justify that by saying, "We couldn't fit it all on one card!"... which is kindof a lie, because I'm sure some of the other stars had longer names.

The next day, I remember celebrating my 8th birthday at home, with friends from school; it was a sports-themed party. My parents put together an obstacle course in the backyard and we were timed to see how fast we could run through it. And my cake was a "golf" cake; had a little figurine of a golfer about to take a golf swing and putt a ball into a hole. (If I can scan some pictures, I'll share 'em here.)
