Subject: Rubik's Cube Type Toys

Written By: ADH13 on 11/26/07 at 10:00 pm

We all remember the Rubik's Cube, but there were several other similar toys that kind of jumped on the bandwagon.

I remember there was a Pyramid, a "Whip It" (the whip it if I remember right was sort of more like those little cheap puzzles with 8 tiles and 9 spaces where you move the tiles around to make a picture or put numbers in order, etc... but it was cylinder shaped...

I think there was a round version also, and a long strip that you could twist different ways to make different things, wow, I haven't thought about that in years, I think I used to know how to make a dog, a UFO... I can't remember what else... :-\\

I remember a thread like this not long ago.

I had the Rubik's Magic and Snake. I remember turning the Rubik's Magic into a box which I used as a GI Joe prison cell.  :D

I didn't know there was anything to solve on the snake... I thought you just made things out of it...

I used to be able to solve the Rubik's Cube really fast.  Of course sometimes those little coloured stickers weren't always easy to peel off ;D

Another form of the Rubik's Cube was the Rubik's Clock

http://www.puzzle-shop.de/rubiks-clock.gif

It was complicated to do, pressing down the combination determinds which direction the arrow or indicator goes, and all the indicators had to be at twelve o'clock. All that may be fine, but the same is done on the other side.

Yes, it's in all the toy shop at the moment.  My daughter just had one from a friend for her birthday.

I only once solved the Rubik's Cube - when I was drunk and I had a friend showing me.

I had a Snake.  I was given it when I was in hospital having my appendix removed. I also had Rubik's Magic but had totally forgotten about it until I saw the pictures posted here.

We had Magic too, but fell apart, it was not strongly made for our fingers.

Don't remember what happened to mine, probably went to a jumble sale or something.

Someone managed to break my snake (can't now remember if it was me or one of my brothers)

We still have a "Cube" left over for the 80's sitting on the window sill and the "Clock" is in a cupboard.

I used to like the more challenging Rubik's Cubes that instead of colors, had ones like card suits (♥♦♣♠) or numbers.  They even had ones that lit up and looked like the floor of a 70s disco.  Those were cool!

You can get the light up ones again.  At least ones with the centre one lit up.

I had a Rubik's Cube, which I never did figure out how to solve. (There was this one dopey kid in my 6th grade class who always boasted how he could "solve" it, which in reality consisted of him scrambling it and then unscrambling it in the exact same order. Finally another kid snatched it away from him and messed it all up and gave it back to him, and he started bawling.  ;D)

I also had a cheap knock-off Rubik's Cube, but instead of having colors it had like the ace of spades on one side, and the king of diamonds on another, etc. It was a piece of sh*t.

I had a Pyraminx, which was actually quite easy to solve.

http://www.rubikspuzzles.com/images/pyraminx.jpg

I also had an Orb, which was a cool puzzle and a bit more difficult to solve than the Pyraminx, but nowhere near as hard as the Rubik's Cube.

So....how many people here who had a Rubik's Cube wound up saying "f*ck it" and just breaking it apart and putting it back together?  ;D ;D ;D

I had a Rubik's Cube with Pac Man and the ghosts on each side.  I got it at the Pac Man tent at the 1982 World's Fair.

There was also a Rubik's Cube with Chex Mix pieces on the sides.  It was a Chex cereal giveaway.

I owned a Rubik's Cube but I never solved it.  I never really tried either.  I was more the Marvin the Paranoid Android type:  "Why bother?  Who cares?"
