Subject: 99 Luftballoons - English or German

Even though I think both versions Nena's hit are great, I think the German version is much cooler to listen to, IMO.  8)

I like both but I prefer the English version. I want to be able to sing along not fake it!

Both versions, but German has the certain Ich weiß nicht?

The German version always sounded a bit edgier, so that got meine vote!

I'm leaning more toward the German version myself.

Apparently the only thing that's the same in English and German is "Captain Kirk." ;D

English, as it's the version I was 'brought up' on...and German is hardly the world's most evocative language to sing in!

Not exactly a surprise that we British needed a translation (as we normally do!), but rather odd that our American friends would prefer the German tongue...

I like both versions but the German version takes the lead just a little.

I hadn't heard that song in such a long time...

Strangely enough, when the song came out I was taking my first year in Deutsch (German) in high school. I always thought the song sounded better in German than English, but didn't mind them re-doing it in English either!  ;)
(um, you have to understand I had a very sexxy instructor, and cannot ever forget that).  ;)

German, without a doubt.

Hast du etwas Zeit für mich?
Singe ich ein Lied für dich von neunundneunzig Luftballoons...

Also, there's another song on that very album called ,,Das Land der Elefanten'' which I really dig.

In the same vein, when I come to recall the singing in the Ode To Joy part of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, I sing the German words more than the English.

I remember bot hversions real well, but I prefer the English one :)

The English version '99 Red Balloons' was a #1 hit in both the UK and Canada
The German version '99 Luft Ballons' was a #1 hit in Germany and reached #2 in the USA

Both were ok but the German version is a bit better. In any event both versions are better the the new
version released in 2002.

Being sung in the original German, the lyrics of the song will have the true meaning.

How many of you that prefer the German version actually know German and how much of your love is actually fetish-isation of the exotic?

I like the German one better, again, because it sounds edgier. German as a language doesn't sound as pretty as Italian or French, but it does sound pretty cool at times! I don't know much German, but do have a German dictionary. My Grandma is full blood German, as well.

I come from a family of German descent as well - I grew up in Milwaukee where a lot of German immigrants settled at the beginning of the 20th century.  :)

Kasey Kasem always played the English version, which sounds way hokier than the German version if you don't speak German.  The German version won out in the end.

Actually he did play the German version from time to time - in fact on one or two occasions I remember him playing a mix of both versions on American Top 40.

I always loved the Punk remake by the band 7 Seconds from 1984.

Oh...I do believe you're right.  I recall Casey doing that a couple of times.
