Top 40 wise in North America, Kajagoogoo were one hit wonders.  They did have another minor hit on Billboard with 'Hang on Now'.  In their native UK, they had a handful of hits

Alot of novelty songs were one hit wonders.  Here's a bunch that actually made the Top 40 in Canada ...

George Burns - I Wish I Was 18 Again
Billy Crystal - You Look Marvelous
The (WWF) Wrestlers - Land of 1,000 Dances

I think Stacy Q had a second hit, though not as big as "Two of Hearts."

How big does the hit have to be to be considered a one-hit wonder????  Not sure if these qualify:

Diesel - Sausalito Summer Night (1981)      (I Love This Tune!)
Giuffria - Call To The Heart (1985)
Camper Van Beethoven - Pictures of Matchstick Men (1988)
Chiliwack - She's Gone So Long (1981)

Paul Kelly and The Messengers ....and before that, Paul Kelly and The Coloured Girls are quite popular in Australia and had many hits in the 80's.

Also someone mentioned a hit by Mental As Anything earlier and they were huge in Australia (both bands being AUssie and all)... :)

Yes, two that spring to mind are 'You little thief' and 'Listen to your father' in the early 80s. 'A good heart' (written by 'Show me heaven' Maria Mckee) is his best solo effort imo.

Some one hit wonders in the UK (I'm sure Jason is going to prove me wrong here, lol) . . .

'Suddenly' - Angry Anderson
'Stutter rap (no sleep 'til bedtime)' - Morris Minor and the Majors
'Living on video' - Trans-X

'Man in motion (St Elmo's Fire) - John Parr
'Japanese boy' - Aneka
'No memory' - Scarlet Fantastic
'Crash' - Primitives
'(Bring me) Edelweiss' - Edelweiss
'Loadsamoney (doin' up the house)' - Harry Enfield

Morris Minor and the Majors was the comedian Tony Hawks, who has had Won Hit Oneder in Albania

Harry Enfield was due for a follow up hit of Last Christmas but it did not materialise

That's right (he recently did an insurance ad on telly). He performed an acoustic version of 'Stutter rap' at a comedy tour a few years ago.

A good job it didn't materialise, I can certainly do without that, lol.

Interestingly enough, not many people know who 'The Snowmen' actually were but if the singer isn't Ian Dury he's the best Ian Dury imitator I've ever heard.

John Parr had a 2nd UK Top 40 with the Meat Loaf duet 'Rock and Roll Mercenaries' in 1986.  He also had a previous 1984 Top 40 hit in America called 'Naughty Naughty'

Trans-X had some dance hits, but 'Living on Video' was their only mainstream.  Aneka had 1 other minor UK hit called 'Little Lady' that reached UK #50

Angry Anderson I believe had other hits in his native Australia, but in the UK, he was a one hit wonder yes

Both Aneka and Morris Minor were one hitters here in Canada as well with those songs you mentioned

Technically, hitting No 50 is a 'hit' but I don't rate it unless it gets into the top 40.

Angry Anderson I believe had other hits in his native Australia, but in the UK, he was a one hit wonder yes

Yeah, I kind of expected that. Anderson had that hit in the UK primarily because it was the song played at Scot and Charlene's wedding in 'Neighbours' all those years back if I remember correctly (when 'Neighbours' was good).

Both Aneka and Morris Minor were one hitters here in Canada as well with those songs you mentioned

'Stop the cavalry' is a great song (my grandad bought the single when it came out). I don't think I've heard anything like it in the charts since. Jona Lewie (John Lewis) was the lead singer of 'Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs' in the early 70s and had a couple of hits like 'In the kitchen at parties' and 'Big shot momentarily'.

You're not the first Brit to say that ;D  Stutter Rap was massive in Canada reaching #14 in 1988.  Oddly enough, it missed the US chart completely

If 'Stutter rap' got into the US charts I would probably understand it because Morris Minor and the Majors were spoofing 'The Beastie Boys' at the time (a clever spoof at that) but Canada? I would never believe it if it didn't come from a Canadian's mouth, lol.

Here's some one hit wonders that appeared in the Canadian chart.  This list is based on an artist who only had 1 hit song in the whole of the chart because in Canada, many songs that fell outside of the Top 40 were still popular favourites.

Keep in mind these are just in the Canadian chart.  Many of these artists had other hits in other countries ...

I.O.U. - Freeez
Homosapien - Pete Shelley
It's My Party - Dave Stewart and Barbra Gaskin
Boom Boom (Let's Go Back to My Room) - Paul Lekakis
Brother Louie - Modern Talking
No More Boleros - Gerard Joling
You've Got to Be A Winner - Huey 'Baby' Harris
Cars - Gary Numan
High Energy - Evelyn Thomas
You Look Marvelous - Billy Crystal
Let Me Go - Heaven 17
Hot Hot Hot - Arrow
Da Da Da - Trio
Only You - The Flying Pickets
Superstar - Lydia Murdock
Each Time You Break My Heart - Nick Kamen
I Only Want to Be With You - The Tourists Not includng Eurythmics
Town Called Malice - The Jam I know this is shocking, but what's more shocking is that they had no hit singles in America
Midnight Blue - Louise Tucker
(I Can't) Breakaway - Big Pig
Tears on Your Anorak - The Drivers
Heartache Avenue - The Maisonettes
Too Many Times - Mental As Anything
Land of A Thousand Dances - The (WWF) Wrestlers
Japanese Boy - Aneka

Now it's my turn but you probably now this already . . .  ;)

Freeez had 'Southern Freeez' and 'Pop goes my love' just about snuck into the Top 30.
Gary Numan had a few other hits including 'Are friends electric?' (sampled in last few years by Sugababes) and 'We are glass'.
Mental as anything had a hit in the UK with 'Live it up' (Crocodile Dundee soundtrack).
Heaven 17 are not a one hit wonder in the UK and I truly can't believe Canada didn't get 'Temptation' in the charts.  :o
Nick Kamen had other minor hits including 'Loving you is sweeter than ever'
I also can't believe you didn't get 'Going underground' or 'That's entertainment' from The Jam either!  :o
China Crisis had a few hits including 'Black man Ray' and 'Christian'.

We were lucky to even have gotten 'Town Called Malice'.  To my knowledge, it was the first song from a British punk group to reach the Canadian Top 40.  What's even more surprising is how alot o the ones I listed even charted here becuase well over half of them didn't even chart in the States

For the heck of it, one I listed by the group The Drivers was a British band led by Nick Van Eede, who would later form Cutting Crew using several connections he made while in Canada

Showing my ignorance, I was born in the mid 1980's and that song is the only video VH1 aired in the mid 1990's

We were lucky to even have gotten 'Town Called Malice'.  To my knowledge, it was the first song from a British punk group to reach the Canadian Top 40.  What's even more surprising is how alot o the ones I listed even charted here becuase well over half of them didn't even chart in the States

Yeah, I think 'The Jam' are a very English band and I guess some of their effect gets lost across the pond and beyond.

For the heck of it, one I listed by the group The Drivers was a British band led by Nick Van Eede, who would later form Cutting Crew using several connections he made while in Canada

Really? Wow, I didn't know that . . .

As for Steve Winwood, he was in The Spencer Davis Group and Traffic back in the 60s having hits like 'Keep on running' before his solo career. Songs I know from the 80s alone are When you see a chance, Higher love, Back in the high life again and Valerie (all classics).

First I would like to recommend that you give Spell Check a try.  It does ONDERS!.  LOL.

It always pains me when people say that A-ha was a one-hit wonder due to Take On Me.  In America, this appears to be true.  The group is amazing though.  They have over a dozen hits throughout the world and have continuously put out albums since 1985.

They are such a great band with alot of wonderful songs such as:
Take On Me (everyone know this ONE hit)
The Sun Always Shines On TV
I've Been Losing You
The Swing Of Things
The Living Daylights
Stay On These Roads
Summer Moved On
The Blood That Moves The Body

Its really an injustice (to me).  I am going crawl into beg and hug my A-ha CDs and cry.

They did have a 2nd (and last) US Top 40 with 'The Sun Always Shines..' but no one really seems to remember that one.  A-ha had so many hits in their career, and they are still going strong in other parts of the world

I am proud to say that A-ha had 5 Top 40 hits here in Canada.  I wish it could have been more though

From what I can gather, A-ha are still going but they don't get much commercial success in the UK these days.  :-\\

The best thing about this thread is that I was reminded of many songs I had forgot about, found them on youtube, recorded them into an MP3, and loaded them into my ipod! Thanks much!  :D

the worse thing about this thread is it's supposed to be about hits but most of the songs mentioned I've never heard of

;D

yeah i think it got off the beaten path somewhere,  it was about a "one hit" wonder, meaning that the artist had one big hit, even though may have released other songs that were by no means a "hit!  there that  should clear it up! ;D

^ That's not the true definition of a one hit wonder though

I once saw a show there they said Kim Carnes was a one hit wonder because she only had 1 US #1 hit ('Bette Davis Eyes').  Using that same logic, then Aerosmith are also one hit wonders :D

certainly aerosmith was not a one hit wonder, they had many many songs for over 30 years now!  everone knows that, maybe they only hit #2  or even #22 but they got air play!  and in my opinion bettie davis eyes was a great tune for kim carnes, and her only hit as well!

The pop music definition for a "One Hit Wonder" is that the artist/s had only one single that made the single charts. The same artist/s could have many releases, but not sell well and make the required position in the charts. In the UK Charts it is chart position of 75 or above.

That's right. The pure definition of a one hit wonder (according to the Guinness Book of Hit Singles) is an artist/group that got to number 1 with one song - and nothing else!

However, there are quite a few bands/artists out there that have had one major hit and then failed to achieve a UK Top 40 slot. AC/DC's feat is impressive in the UK - 28 hits to date and none have hit the top 10 (closest was Heatseeker (no 12) back in 1988).

Such as Kim Carnes, she was far from a one hit wonder, and without even seeing the charts, I know this cause I remember other great songs like 'Voyeur', 'Invisible Hands' and 'Crazy in the Night' ...

1978 - You're A Part of Me <w/ Gene Cotton>
1979 - It Hurts So Bad
1980 - Don't Fall in Love With A Dreamer <w/ Kenny Rogers>
1980 - More Love
1980 - Cry Like A Baby
1981 - Deep Inside My Heart <w/ Randy Meisner>
1981 - Bette Davis Eyes
1981 - Draw of the Cards
1982 - Voyeur
1982 - Does it Make You Remember
1983 - Invisible Hands
1984 - You Make My Heart Beat Faster
1984 - I Pretend
1984 - What About Me <w/ Kenny Rogers and James Ingram>
1984 - Make No Mistake, He's Mine <w/ Barbra Streisand>
1985 - Invitation to Dance
1985 - Crazy in the Night
1985 - Abadabadango
1986 - Divided Hearts
1993 - Gypsy Honeymoon
