Subject: Teased, Big Hair

Written By: apollonia1986 on 04/09/08 at 4:12 pm

Hi Everyone!

Okay, I need a real hair pro for this one: I really really REALLY love the big teased hair that women were sporting in the 80s and I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice on how to achieve this look. My hair is shoulder length and I usually wear it straight. But it's actually kind of limp. (And I want to achieve bigger hair without getting a curly perm) If anyone has any suggestions about products or rollers or techniques, please let me know! I'll Karma you too!

Thanks a heap!

I did the whole big teased hair thing in the later part of the 80's.  :D

Me and my friends mostly used curling irons to tease up our bangs sky high. Some of them used hot rollers, others (like me) used crimping irons (do they still have those?) and curling irons of various size. And yes, Aqua Net hairspray.....lots of it!  :) :)

^^Karma^^

Thanks. I don't have bangs,l but have been considering getting them for a while. Is there a way I can get the look with velcro rollers? I used to use a crimping iron, but that frying sound freaks me out! LOL!.

Thanks for your help!  ;D

You can try velcro rollers, although you might have to keep them in your hair a little longer.  :)

My poor hair was fried and dried after using the crimping iron so much during those days.  ;D

A curling iron and shellac!  ;D  ALWAYS flip your head forward and blow your hair when it's upside down.  Spray the holy crap out of it that way also.  This will add lots of volume.

Backcomb your hair like crazy, smooth out the top portion slightly and finish with a lot of extra hold hairspray.  The ones in the can not the pump.

I had mega big hair back in the 80's.  It was very long and thick and of course permed.  :D

If you posted a pic of the style you were going for we could perhaps offer more specific advice.

Fructis do a volumiser mousse that works really well in lifting your roots; especially if you dry your hair upside down.

See, if you were black or biracial you wouldn't have that issue. My friend Hayden (she's black) has this really volumous, thick, soft hair. It's so dark and nice, and she never has to use hair spray or mousse to get it to maintain its shape. And she straightens it when she gets sick of it. It's pretty damn cool, actually.  ;D

Hey Apollonia...

I swear by this product that I use, It is called Big Sexy Hair. I use the spray that you put in after washing your hair..and I also use the finishing spray after blow drying...OMG, it works so well!!! You can buy it at most beauty salons.

Wow, thanks for all the info guys! Karma to all!

And someone mentioned if I was Black, I am Black, but when my hair first gets done, it's flat as a pancake. LOL.

Thanks for all the help guys! I totally appreciate it.

Although I don't think i'll be quite as big as the lady in the photo in the last post. LOL.

Hi Guys! I see I missed a question:

Hi Karen. You mentioned posting a pic of the hairstyle I'd like to try to emulate. In an ideal universe, I'd have really long hair like Apollonia. But since I live in the real world and my hair is shorter,
I found one 80s looks that is pretty cool. I really like Shelia E's hair from when she first got famous in the 80s. I couldn't really find a good photo of her hair, but I found a Youtube video of her performing one of her songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0opQy664GfI

Her hair looked so cool!  ;D

This was the only semi-good photo I could find:

Got any suggestions?

A lot of the girls in my high school really looked like that!  Just get your Lee press-ons and a few Bon Jovi t-shirts and you're good to go! That look defines a period, like the Farrah Fawcett feathered hair did a decade earlier!

Mine never got quite that bad!  ;D

Wash it, dry it upside down, crimp it, back comb it and use about a can of hairspray! Man no wonder my hair is wrecked............

That's some pretty big hair. A little unruly for me. LOL. I wonder what the woman in the photo's hair looks like now.  8)

They still make Lee Press On nails right? I've seen the little knockoffs, but not the original ones.  ;)

Lee Press-On Nails...LOL....I actually used to wear these just for fun in the 4th and 5th grades. They didn't adhere to my own nails for a long time, though.

Back during my hair-metal days, I would use Aqua-Net and a towel. I would spray that crap on and rat the hell out of my hair, so that I looked something like the singer in this band:

EXACTLY like that, in fact.

Of course, now I'm 50% bald  :D

You can french-twist the back of your hair and do up your bangs!! That's what I did!

That's what I did too.  I used Aqua Net for the firmness.  I sprayed it on my teased bang.  Those were the days!

I still love big hair...it's sexy! ;) I'm not talking about the hair metal band hair necessarily...but the big sexy hair of someone like Katharine McPhee. I always try to get major volume with my hair. :)

I dunno about that. Baldness is VERY genetic in my family...

That's why chicks in the 80s rocked.  They knew they had it and flaunted it with, erm...style.  The big hair, the crazy make-up, the 'anything goes' fashion...

I'm watching this RATT music video from '89 and the whole thing is like an 80s rocker-chick fashion revue...

I think that big hair is slowly coming back.

Hand to God, two weeks ago, I was getting hair done and the lady that got her hair done before got a Jherri Kurl. I kid you not, she did! And it looked GOOD!  :)

The 80s are slowly coming back and I am ecstatic.  8)

Here's some clips showing a couple of silly chicks, stylin' and profilin', from VHS in 1983!  Classic...

Made for YouTube.  I'd like to see more of these homegrown vids from back then...

One of my friend's older sisters used to cut her hair in the asymetrical style...short on one side, longer on the other. Back then, I thought it looked pretty cool, but I knew my mom would've never let me cut my hair like that!
