Subject: Stingray (NBC TV Series)

Written By: whistledog on 04/25/08 at 8:49 pm

Not to be confused with the British 60s TV series of the same name

Stingray was a short-lived Action series starring Canadian actor Nick Mancuso.  Created by legendary producer/writer/creator Stephen J. Cannell, it ran for 2 seasons between 1985-1987 on NBC.  A mysterious man known only as Ray (Mancuso) places an ad in the newspaper offering his services to anyone who needs his help.  Being a good samaritan, he doesn't accept money, only that in return, whomever he helps must do him a favour in the future

('Silent Running', the actual song was kept in the DVD release.  Shocking, eh?)

The Complete Series is now available on a 6 disc DVD set.  I got my copy.  Have you got yours?

I remember watching that on Fridays...then Miami Vice came on after that (or the other way around...can't remember).

I remember the series, I had almost forgot.

It was a pretty good show (as good as these types of shows were). I think the issue was that, at the time, there were just too many "mysterious man/good samaritain with cool car" type of thing going on.

That with "Knightrider", the "A-Team" and other 80's slick shows like Miami Vice, Stingray kinda got lost in the shuffle.

The one that came closest to Stingray was 'The Equalizer' which premiered as a series before Stingray, and ended up lasting longer

I remember watching some episodes of "Stingray" during its run. I think it did come on after "Miami Vice".

Man, I get all the way to Episode 6 on the set, and it starts to skip.  So I exchanged it and it skips in the exact same location.  The store only had just the two copies, and no other store had it.  I am officially sad now :\'(

Cool Mike Post theme music.

******SPOILERS****** as they say...

What the hell happened at the end of the series?  Did he ever get his identity back and all that jazz?  I remember that creepy boss with the 'fro and glasses he reported to.  Seems like Stingray was always under his thumb.

I'm really sorry about that....I hate it when that happens, and it has happened to me a few times. I hope the other discs play OK.

Old post, but from your description, you are thinking of a different show.  Stingray didn't have a boss.  He worked on his own with help from those he did "favours" for in the past

There is often confusion, but they do share a common bond.  Both shows were short lived and featured a Canadian actor in a principal role (Lois Maxwell was the voice of Lt. Shore in the 60s Stingray).  60s Stingray had 39 episodes.  80s Stingray only had 24

♦ Nick Mancuso went on to play Tom Breaker in both 'Under Siege' movies
♦ Lois Maxwell went on to play Miss Moneypenny in 14 James Bond films

:D
