Subject: The ongoing feud, Diamond Dave or Sammy Hagar?

David Lee Roth ftw. Van Halen was just way too poppy without him (and Sammy Hagar had no balls)

Dave all the way. I stopped listening to their music after "1984".

Diamond Dave by a long shot!  Some of their songs with Hagar were good, but Roth has a far more interesting personality; I'm glad he's back performing with them again.  8)

I actually like them both, but I think David Lee Roth was the better frontman for Van Halen.

I'm not a big Sammy Hagar fan (besides a few solo songs, and VH songs like "Dreams"), but I do like that he was more of a balladeer and pop artist in the band than Dave was.

That being said, there were more classics with him. I LOVE "Jump" for instance, that's been one of my favorites since the early '90s, just a fun pop/rock song that makes you feel good. He had a couple great solo songs too...so I guess I'd go with him, but really whenever I see this debate I never cling to one side 'cause I think they both are good singers.

Dave. And Sammy on his own.

Dave. And Sammy on his own.

I actually prefer Dave in and out of Van Halen. In he was the baddest frontman in the 80's, and out he was in a supergroup more or less with his solo band. He had Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan solo, whom are Gods on their respected instruments. Sammy Hagar was too cheesy in Van Halen and too boring out of Van Halen (though I'll admit he did have a better voice).

Dave all the way.  It just isn't Van Halen without him.

David Lee Roth.

It's kind of hard to explain, but Dave gave Van Halen this kind of swagger that made them so great, and they lost that when he left and Sammy Hagar took over.  I remember thinking right away when Hagar took over that he just wasn't the right fit for the band.

It was a different band after Dave left, for sure...

I did like Sammy's solo stuff so when I first learned of the forthcoming release of 5150 with Sammy in front, I thought it could be good.  5150 turned out to be among my most listened-to albums of the 80s and one of only two Van Halen concerts I've attended...

I don't get it, though.  Sammy already had a strong career when he was solo and that's not counting his Montrose and H.S.A.S. fans, so he really didn't need Van Halen...

Everything after 5150 I never cared for.  Sammy is definately not the lyricist Dave is, his lyrics sometimes bordering on the painful...

As for Gary Cherrone, I'll forget that ever happened.  I bought VH III after it was released, played it a couple of times, and threw it into the garbage.  Fire in the Hole was the closest thing to a decent song on that album...
