Subject: The Pet Shop Boys.

I'm sure that there have been a thread or two about them on this board before but, oh well.  I like "In Suburbia" "Opportunities" "Always on my mind" "It's a Sin" and " It's Going to be Alright" (if anyone remembers that one).  In fact, I even bought an album that they released at the tail end of the nineteis with a single on it called "New York City Boy."

There's nothing I DON'T like ... of the 18 tracks on their 'Discography' album. Of this hits collection ... my fave is probably 'Being Boring' ... although other stand outs on a great collection,  are 'What have I done to deserve this' (featuring 'Dusty Springfield' ); Suburbia; and .... of course 'West End Girls' ....... the song that introduced me to them .... all the way back in 86 (?). It was SO fresh to my ears back then.  8)

Yes .... 'Discography' is a VERY pleasant experience.

I think they're pretty cool. I love "It's a Sin" and "What Have I Done to Deserve This".

'Discography' is a great CD, but a few years back, they released a better one called 'PopArt', a 2 CD collection that has nearly all their singles 1985-2003.  My all-time favourite is still their cover of The Village People's 'Go West'

My Pet Shop Boys faves include:

Opportunities
Suburbia
It's a Sin
What have I done to deserve this? (great collaboration with Dusty Springfield)
Always on My Mind (this version is good, although I'm slightly more partial to Willie Nelson's version personally)

My favorite PSB songs are:

Suburbia  (My ultimate favorite!)
Jealousy (second favorite - it is dark)
Always On My Mind
Can You Forgive Her
Domino Dancing (for its Freestyle beat)

Yes, Jason, I think PopArt is probably the best 'best of' album when we are talking The Pet Shop Boys. It is in my collection and I want for nothing else - it even has New York City Boy on there!  8)

Like some of you here, there isn't much from Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe that I don't like. My favourite stuff from them was from around 1986 - 1988 featuring tracks like Suburbia, Opportunities (let's make lot's of money), It's a sin and the brilliant cover of Always On My Mind.

For anybody who wants to know what the video to 'Always on my mind' was about, it was snippets of the film they made called 'It couldn't happen here'. The film was made because The Pet Shop Boys didn't want to go on tour and hoped this would do the job:

I could never get into them in general (something about the guy's style of singing I guess), BUT I always loved "What Have I Done to Deserve This" - that's one of those sunny, catchy '80s pop songs that just makes you feel good. I like the midtempo stuff. ;)

I know what you mean. Of their hits, there are probably more that I hate than love.

eg

Love : West End Girls, Suburbia, Domino Dancing

Hate : It's A Sin, Always On My Mind, Opportunities etc

"West End Girls" totally brings up the Spring of '86 with me.

I lost interest in them after they started putting out total schmaltz in the '90s, but their last two records were really good!

This doesn't sound very sunny and feel good to me. :D

You always wanted a lover
I only wanted a job
I've always worked for my living
How am I gonna get through?
How am I gonna get through?

I come here looking for money
(Got to have it)
And end up Leaving with love, oh, oh
Now you left me with nothing
(Can't take it)
How am I gonna get through?
How am I gonna get through?

I bought you drinks, I brought you flowers
I read you books and talked for hours
Every day, so many drinks
Such pretty flowers, so tell me
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I ...

Since you went away I've been hanging around
I've been wondering why I'm feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
But I don't know, oh
How I'm gonna get through?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
How I'm gonna get through?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

You always wanted me to be something I wasn't
You always wanted too much, oh, oh
Now I can do what I want to - forever
How am I gonna get through?
How am I gonna get through?

At night, the people come and go
They talk too fast, and walk too slow
Chasing time from hour to hour
I pour the drinks and crush the flowers
What have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I ...

Since you went away I've been hanging around
I've been wondering why I'm feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
But I don't know, oh
How I'm gonna get through? (baby)
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
How I'm gonna get through? (baby)
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
How I'm gonna get through? (baby)
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
How I'm gonna get through? (tell me)
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
How I'm gonna get through? (baby)
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
How I'm gonna get through? (yeah)
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

Gonna get through?
Gonna get through?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
I'm gonna get through, right?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

We don't have to fall apart, we don't have to fight
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
We don't need to go to hell and back every night
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
You never ever left me, baby, think of me...
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
Oh, babe
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

We don't have to fall apart, we don't have to fight
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
We don't need to go to hell and back every night
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

Gonna get through, baby, I'm gonna get
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
Forever
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
Gonna get through, baby, yeah,
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
Gonna get through, get through, baby, ooh
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

It's Pet Shop Boys trickery!  Lay down a fun catchy melody and brooding lyrics and it'll make the people feel good!  Dance a jig to "Yesterday When I Was Mad" ! :D

Me too.  Spring Break '86, to be exact.  Hanging out at the beach.  Among the last of my finer moments... :P

Cannot tolerate that song now... 8-P

I like Suburbia and Love Comes Quickly...

I really, really enjoy the Pet Shop Boys! It's electronic dance music at its best, with lyrics that make you think. The instrumental breaks in "You Were Always on My Mind" totally blow me away! I also like "What Have I Done to Deserve This?," "It's a Sin" and "Left to My Own Devices."

They did this funny little b-side thing: "The Sound of the Atom Smashing," which I always liked.

PSB had some of the same problem Erasure had, they were too targeted towards a certain lifestyle.  I mean you could say the same of the Smiths, but Morrissey's lyrics were much more ambiguous...or were they?
???
