Subject: Remember these 1989 songs?

Written By: whistledog on 07/10/08 at 11:48 pm

I have found that not many people remember these following songs from 1989, so I officially ask, do you remember them?  If not by the title or artist, but atleast to hear them the tune is familiar?

The Way to Your Heart - Soul Sister

Downtown - One 2 Many

Shooting From My Heart - Big Bam Boo

Cry - Waterfront

Hey Baby - Henry Lee Summer

Who Do You Give Your Love To - Michael Morales

NOTE:  In some countries, 'The Way to Your Heart' by Soul Sister was a hit in 1988

The only one that didn't chart in the USA LOL
Actually it did; It apparently reached the Top 20 on Billboard's Rock Chart in 1989

Sure I remember Soulsister.  :) They were a Belgian duo, and experienced some success over here as well. "The Way To Your Heart" peaked at #7 in Dutch Top 40.

I don't know any of those songs.  This should come as no surprise to you, however  ;D

The only name I recognize even NOW is Henry Lee Summer, but I didn't know it then. Around '97 I got an 80s compliation tape with "I Wish I Had a Girl" on it, but that's not even the right song lol.

Did they have other singles in the Dutch chart?  I know they had a few in their homeland.  In North America and the UK, "The Way to Your Heart" was their only chart entry.  I have their "It Takes Two" CD and I still love it.  Danceable and fun! :)

That was his first hit and remains his best known song.  I like it! :)

^ Yeah I liked it right away too. It's breezy and upbeat, sounds kinda like John Mellencamp but more poppy.

I have "Hey Baby" by Henry Lee Summer and "Cry" by Waterfront on one of my old mixtapes. I still think they're both great songs!

Does anyone remember "I Remember Holding You" by Boys Club? The group was sort of spin-off of The Jets.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKc46A7CK5A

And "Heaven Help Me" by Deon Estus (featuring George Michael on background vocals)?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g06TP17rSA4

Actually, I think the latter song is from late 1988, but I did hear it on the radio through 1989.

I remember both those :)

I have "Heaven Help Me" on 45 and it spanned into 1989 yes.
Deon Estus started his career as the bass player for Wham! and can be heard (and seen on some of their videos) on the albums "Make It Big" and "Music From the Edge of Heaven".  Deon's follow-up single "Spell" was a minor hit in 1989

Only one other..."Broken" reached #31 in 1993.

"Like a Mountain" (both original and remix) got stuck in bubbling under section, as did "Through Before We Started" (billed as Leyers, Michiels & Soulsister).

I remember all except the Michael Morales track, which is surprising since it charted fairly high in the US compared to the rest of the lot.

I've heard the Henry Lee Summer and Michael Morales songs on a classic Rick Dees countdown from 1989 that they just played on XM Radio's 80s channel.

Another obscure but good song from '89 is Don't Tell Me Lies by Breathe (best known for their hits Hands to Heaven and How Can I Fall?)  :)

Another one that got a lot of airplay in '89 -

W.D. - I think only "Cry" by Waterfront (which is a great song, might I add) was the only hit here in the New York / New Jersey area.  I have never heard of the other songs or artists.

Coqueta - Boys Club's "I Remember Holding You" was a great song.

I think alot of people know and like both of these songs, but probably forgot about them.  They are little gems.

They(Boys Club) sounded alot more laid-back or A/C than the Jets did in my opinion.

I think thats a great forgotten song from the 80's. I remember that song from when I was younger too.

I think "Don;t Take It Personal" by Jermaine Jackson is an overlooked 1989 song, it went #1 on the R&B chart but only went up to #64 on the Billboard Hot 100 according to wikipedia.

What about "Teenage Love" by rapper Slick Rick wasn't that song from 1989?

Yeah, I agree...I still have that cassette today. Their sound was softer compared to the more up-tempo songs The Jets were known for, aside from their ballads.  :)

Here's a few more from 1989:

Daniel Lanois - The Maker
Really cool forgotten gem.

^ Daniel Lanois - The Maker.  I'm surprised anyone outside of Canada knows that song, but then again, perhaps not.  He made himself a name as U2's producer, so perhaps that song is more known than I thought.  A great song :)

Yep, it sounds like a remake from Rick Astley because the song was created by S/A/W (Stock Aitken Waterman) who used similar production all through the late 80s - including on every single Rick Astley song he made up until 1990.

Sonia is from Liverpool and, to be honest, I am surprised she had as much success as she did (managing to survive the S/A/W collapse for a short time). Sonia attempted a comeback in the last few years or so but it didn't happen for her.

I'm quite an 80s music expert and I've heard of none of those. #10 in America is pretty good though for here.

I don't claim to be an 80's music expert but I've heard most of those, including the songs recently added to this thread.  Jaya and Shana got quite a bit of radio play in Phoenix in '89.

I remember downtown really well now, I almost forgot about it.  My mom would play it all the time and it's even on one of our home videos.  No wonder I get excited whenever I go downtown.

I don't remember the Downtown song referenced above.  However I remember these tasty songs from '89:

I think that "Cry" song by Waterfront was just a rip-off of George Michael.

The end-all to the 1980's era (IMHO).  The perfect capstone to the best decade in music...
