Subject: MTV - First 10 Videos Aired On August 1, 1981

Written By: midnite on 09/07/08 at 3:46 pm

Per thr article link below, the first 10 videos aired on MTV on August 1, 1981 are:

1. THE BUGGLES “Video Killed The Radio Star”
2. PAT BENATAR “You Better Run”
3. ROD STEWART "She Won't Dance"
4. THE WHO "You Better You Bet"
5. Ph.D "Little Suzi's On the Up"
6. CLIFF RICHARD "We Don't Talk Anymore"
7. THE PRETENDERS "Brass In Pocket"
8. TODD RUNDGREN "Time Heals"
9. REO SPEEDWAGON "Take It On the Run"
10. STYX "Rockin' the Paradise"

Personally, I think this is a bizarre selection of videos and I wonder why they were chosen.  Perhaps they were the only ones who would agree to music videos at first.  I only know a few of the songs.  The Rod Stewart, Todd Rundgren, PhD, and Styx songs I do not know.

Only familiar with The Pretenders, Pat Benatar, and Buggles.

I wonder how many from David Bowie, Devo, and Talking Heads were played during the first 8 hours. Must've been Rod Stewart fans... (no offense to his fans)

If I remember correctly a lot of artists considered it selling out. I remember it took Bruce Springsteen a long time to air on MTV.

Yeah I don't think there were a lot of videos ready and available to air when MTV first started.
