Subject: Lesser Known: The Official "Minor Hits of the 80s" Thread

Written By: whistledog on 09/15/08 at 8:40 pm

"Hits are hits no matter how high they chart".  I've said this many times, and I still and will always believe in it.  Outside of the Top 40, there are many good songs that not many people know about simply because they are not in the Top 40, so let me introduce you (or re-introduce you) to some, based on country they charted in.

Here is a select 10 each from the US, Canada and the UK.  Not necessarily artists strictly from each country, just general songs that charted.  Some of these may not have been minor hits in other countries, but between these three nations, I have noted where else the song had charted.  Feel free to add others :)

I came into them a few years ago during random searches for 80s songs I hadn't heard of before.  I love alot of that obscure British music of the 80s

I am glad she had Top 40 success somewhere.  Here in her native Canada, she had no chart singles in the Top 100 :(

I have these songs on either vinyl or CD.  The tracks by Lekakis, Book Of Love and Brown were pretty popular in clubs back in the day.

♦ Miquel Brown - So Many Men, So Little Time

Despite it's relatively 'low' placing (strictly speaking, it's not even a UK hit, as our official data only includes the Top 75), this shifted quite a few copies, but the record label that issued it was a 'shoestring' affair and the song suffered promotion-wise...

It was #1 in the unofficial club chart for ages!

♦ Modern Talking - Atlantis is Calling (S.O.S. For Love)

Another minor UK hit from the previous year 'You're My Heart, You're My Soul' was, like most of their stuff, huge on mainland Europe...

Remember The Korgis? Here's the last of their British charters...
It spluttered to #56 in 1980, but is actually miles better than their bigger successes! (Poor quality video...sorry!)

And Marti Webb from the same year, climbing no higher than #61 with this! A travesty!

"If It's Alright With You Baby" reached the dazzling heights of #33 in our charts...

...but it wasn't their last charting single over here. The follow-up made it all the way to #6, thus making it their biggest hit. :o

After that, "That Was My Big Mistake" (self-fulfilling prophecy?) and "True Life Confessions" got stuck in bubbling under section.

Heh! Sounds like it's at the wrong speed!  :D

I'm pretty sure we didn't even bother giving it a single release...

Here's one that did get a British release... (#63 in 1986)

(Along with a English translation, but you know what we're like!  ;))

I'm not so sure about that, when you see what utter garbage topped our charts...

And I'm pretty sure leaving out all of the vocals helped a lot. ;) It's still a pretty popular tune over here.

And speaking of pretty popular tunes...here's another (though it wasn't a big hit, only reaching #28. Still better than UK, though...)

Just thought of another song that wasn't a hit in UK...The The - Uncertain Smile

Well, it only made #31 in our Top 40. Not a big hit either.

Always promised a lot, but never quite delivered... :-\\

Now, put on your dancing trousers for...

A classic bit of Britfunk from 1981...
(So classic, that it never charted! However, HUGE in the clubs, as they say!)

...this belter from 1982 (although whoever uploaded it got the wrong Sharon!) (UK #38)

...and from the following year... (UK #52)
(Please note...I do not advise dancing in minefields!  ;))

That's cause it is Diane Lane in the 80s LOL
That song came from the 1984 motion picture 'Streets of Fire' which Diane Lane co-starred.  In the film, she lip synchs all of the songs

Hahahaha. I had no idea. That explains why.  She was hot then.  Now that I realize that she older, she looks really good for her age. Mmmm.

Underrated band.  Any old-school glam-metalhead who enjoyed that would do well to get the rest of the discography.  "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" and "Heavy Metal Love" are (or should have been :) classics on either side of the border.

I'm always surprised when someone knows of Helix.  They were apparently a moderate success in the US rock chart with a few songs.  They were MASSIVE in their native Canada despite very few singles that made the Top 40.  Rock You was one of the most overplayed songs of 1984, and I still hear it all the time LOL

One good single sells the album.

Gotta give 'em credit for a song for which "R", and "O", could be exchanged for "F", and "U" by millions of carfuls of headbanging teenagers to produce a parody that would have been unairable in the mid-80s.  (Now if you'll excuse me, I've gotta replace the leather wrap around my steering wheel.  Damn kid's worn a hole in it.  How the hell'd he do that in just six months of dirivng?)

They did pretty well in the U.K, certainly on the rock scene. We used to watch the Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' video over and over again. I saw them once, they were very very good live.

Here are a few tracks from my 80s catalog:

F.R. David - Sahara Night (1985)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=935xqewvXdc
I remember this as a kid, so it had to chart in the US.  I am not sure how high.

Colors - Never Mind  (1985)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICdd1QCkH_E
I love this song.  Refreshing and nice.

Christina - What's A Girl To Do  (1984)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eveRrQEItYg
Interesting lyrics and bizarre music.  Who can ask for me.  No idea if/where it charted.

Jimmy Hall - I'm Happy That Love Has Found You (1980)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzUoAAfXQYw
I dont know how I know this song, but it is a good one.

Song To The Siren - This Mortal Coil

This tune (a cover of a Tim Buckley song) reached #29 in our charts.
This Mortal Coil was a collective initiated by Ivo Watts-Russell, and basically involved all of the artists signed to the 4ad Records label, recording covers as well as original material. For this tune, Watts-Russell used Cocteau Twins singer Elisabeth Fraser.
Fraser also featured on (and composed) "Teardrop" - a hit song for Massive Attack.

I know the song was used for a perfume commercial in our country ("Noa" by Cacharel). Don't know if that was used internationally. :-\\

^ This Mortal Coil, there's a name I haven't heard in a while.  I have a cassette copy of their 1991 album 'Blood'

'Song to the Siren' is a good song.  I never really listened to it until last year when I started browsing minor UK chart hits (It reached #66 in the UK chart)
