Subject: Why Was Red Leather So Big?

Written By: apollonia1986 on 09/21/08 at 6:52 pm

Hi Everyone!

As many of you know, watching movies and tv shows from the 1980s is kind of a hobby of mine. I just like the fashion and all that sort of thing. But I have noticed one recurring fashion theme that keeps on popping up on countless programs: red leather.

For instace, last night I was watching the Best of Soul Train and one of the dancers was wearing red shorts shorts and a matching blazer. (and it was a man!)

Now I peronally say that red leather took off like a turbo jet because of Michael Jackson and the Thriller and Beat it jackets. If the biggest star of the decade used the material for two of his hit videos, it must have been hot!

THAT'S MY THEORY, WHAT'S YOURS?  ;D

It must've been a mostly early 80's thing. I always think of Mike Reno and MJ whenever I think of red leather.

It was bright and vibrant! The 80s were all about being noticed. Wild hair, rainbowed colors... neon clothing. Seriously it all makes sense to me  ;D

I love Working for the Weekend. Cool jam.

Now I like red leather in small doses. I have a couple of red leather bags and some shoes, but I can't see myself doing a full red leather jacket, unless I was at a Michael Jackson concert, right there between Tito and Latoya!  ;D
And you're right about the vibrancy. Mike was all out the box and bleeding off the TV with the matching red jeans and all. (I almost bought jeans that color, but at the last minute, changed my mind. LOL)

Red is considered a hot color, leather is considered sexy.

Not that I recall leather was ever considered "out" in my lifetime, but, in the 80's leather ruled!  All colors of leather worked, sure, but, wow, Red  :D

I think leather has stuck around because it really is a classic fashion staple. I mean it's used in gloves and shoes and other outer wear and all. It's just that it got an unconventional twish in the 80s. Did that man on Soul Train really need red leather booty shorts, NO, but he found them. Did Michael Jackson really need a red jacket with 103 zippers? NO, but he found it.

(Did I need a powder blue leather jacket when I was 3, NO, but my mom found it!)

I'd like a red leather jacket, but I know all my friend will start calling me "Michael!"  ::)

(Now if someone knows where I can find a purple leather jacket, PLEASE talk to me! LOL!)

If that is too much for you, there is one that is a black leather coat with purple fringe (much like in the Prince video where he is driving off on the motorcycle... I believe there is fringe involved???????)

I don't know if you deal with e-bay, but this is an option:

Or you could always go with a purple leather/suede number:

Gosh!

Karma to 2kidsami and bookmistress!

Those jackets are insatiable! I love them! Those are amazing!  :o

@2kidsami: No he didn't wear fringe in the movie, but if he had, that jacket would have been on his little skinny back!  ;D

@Bookmistress: Yep, I deal with ebay.  ;D Thank you!

Thank you both! :D

In my younger, wilder, days I always had a pair of red shoes, It was a blast when Elvis came out with that song.

Those shoes are cute, but didn't Elvis sing about Blue suede shoes?  :(

I had a pair of those, but they were white.  Fun fun fun, now I'd break my neck neck neck.  ;D

Elvis Presley sang Blue Suede Shoes,  Elvis Costello sang (The Angels Want to Wear My) Red Shoes  (I probably should have said)

Not to mention my aching back back back   ;D

The earliest case I know of someone wearing a red leather jacket was James Dean in the film Rebel Without a Cause.  8)
