Subject: Trying to figure out the name of an 80's toy

Written By: Jessi on 10/20/08 at 3:03 pm

I am looking for a needle in a haystack, but I figured I would give it a try.
When I was 5 years old (I am 30 now.) I was in a tv commercial for a toy dog. The lady offered my parents a tape of it, but at the time they did not think that they would ever own the equipment that would run the tape!!! I would love to find the tape. At the time, we did not even have a tv, so I never got to see myself in the commercial!
I sat in the lap of a grandma and when I clapped my hands a little brown dog (I think) barked, sat, maybe walked. The commercial was shot in a house in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
I am starting my search by trying to figure out what toy the commercial was for. I did not even get to own one of the dogs :(  The lady gave me a bank!
Any ideas on what the toy could have been. I also think that the commercial was done around Christmas time, so it would have been toward the end 1983.

hmmm, I am 99% sure that is not it. I remember it having legs and being a tan color dog (that actually looks like a dog). Maybe I was deprived of toys, but I don't even remember Petsters at all!

I know the toy you are talking about but I don't know the name of it.

I had an earlier version in the seventies where you had to pull the leash on the dog and it would yap or walk forwards.

The one I had was sort of like a dachshund with darker coloured ears and tail

A nifty blast from the past. I believe this to be of 70's vintage, and typical of the cheaply made, poor quality toys out of Hong Kong. A battery powered Dachshund Dog, which by pulling the lead (which operates a switch) will walk forward, another pull stops him, yet another pull gets his tail wagging and starts him yapping with his mouth opening and closing. He measures 27cm in length. For his age and poor build quality he's in surprisingly good condition, no physical exterior damage although his fur is a little patchy and loose around battery compartment cover on his belly. He works most of the time, sometimes jams up but always starts again with a bit of prompting, his 'yap' works and tail wags. Two 'C' size batteries are not included, however the original box is, and although somewhat tatty, ads to it's display appeal. Overall, a nifty thing, probably not easy to come by a working example. Start is reserve.

That's oretty much the toy I remember!

The one Jessi is asking about is similar in appearance I think.  But the dog yaps, walks and perhaps jumps into a somersault when you clap your hands instead of pulling on the leash

Yes, Karen! That sounds right. The one on a leash is close, but I remember making it "act" from someone's lap, so I can't imagine a leash would have been used. Also, it seems like that was from the 70s but the commercial/toy I am looking for was from 83 and I'm guess it was a new Christmas toy??

Do you have any idea of a name?

I can't think of the name at all.  I've just been scanning through the toys at www.inthe80s.com looking for likely names such as Dachshund or dog or barking... or walking... but didn't get anywhere.

Actually I think I saw a knock-off version for sale in a market rather than the proper toy.

I spent some time looking there too, but could not find anything.
