Prince Not a Prince About Perfume Contract

A perfume company claims Prince and his music publisher Universal failed to honor a contract under which they were supposed to promote two fragrances released in tandem with Prince’s 2006 album “3121.”

Prince released studio album “3121” in 2006 and it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking the singer’s excellent comeback after 2004’s “successful “Musicology.” The past is back to haunt him though, it would appear, as Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics filed a lawsuit against Prince in the New York State Supreme Court on Monday, per the Associated Press.

The company, which is also suing publisher Universal, claims it released two fragrances called 3121, licensing Prince’s name, likeness and the album title “3121” to market the odorous product but Prince failed to fulfill his part of the contract.

Revelations said it spent $2.5 million on the fragrances and agreed to pay half of the profits made from sales to Universal, yet neither Universal nor Prince helped promote the products, which were launched last year.

Universal spokesperson Peter LoFrumento called the breach-of-contract claims “completely without merit.” Prince has apparently not addressed the allegations yet.

The singer has since released more music. Last year, his “Planet Earth” album benefited from more unusual marketing, becoming available in the UK as a free gift with British paper The Mail on Sunday. Distribution that is more traditional followed throughout the rest of the world.

Last month, he released “Indigo Nights,” a live album of songs recorded at the indigO2 nightclub in London last year. The album was sold along with “21 Nights,” a book of poems, lyrics and photos inspired from his 21 consecutive sold-out shows at London’s O2 Arena in 2007.
