Subject: Need help finding a song please -- mid to late 80's

Written By: spongedude on 03/01/09 at 7:21 pm

This is from a video I had seen on MTV mid to late 80's.  It was a British band.  Lead singer had a very British accent.  I do know some of the lyrics & found them once online but didn't write down the name of the band.  Near the end of the song, it goes something along the lines of "ho ho hee hee as you can see no other place I'd rather be - la da dee da la da dee da" etc.  I do remember from the video that when the singer sings the "no other place i'd rather be" part, he is sitting on a trunk or a chair and tapping his foot to the beat of the music.  When they start singing the "la dee da" part, everyone in the video is up and dancing around.  Vaguely remember the title as having the word "think" in it but I could be wrong.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds a lot like The Swingers - "Counting the Beat".

Counting The Beat

Look at the sunrise
I look at it burn
I look into your eyes
Don't know where to turn
I'm gonna drift into that void
I'm flying through space, I'm an asteroid
Time doesn't take place when you're paranoid
I'm thinking about you, and nothing else
Thinking about you, you're thinking about me
Thinking about you, I'm counting the beat
Thinking about you
Thinking about me
Thinking about just you and me, la da de de, there ain't no place I'd rather be
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!

I'm bleeding to death
On a cloudless day
A three, a four heartbeat
A waltzin' away...
Oooh ooh, oo oo
Oooh ooh, oo oo
Oooh ooh, oo oo
Oooh ooh, oo oo
I'm counting the beat 2 3 4 5, I'm feeling the heat to be alive
I'm counting the beat 6 7 8 9, I'm wishing that you,
That you were mine
Thinking about you, you're thinking about me
Thinking about you and counting the beat
Thinking about you
Thinking about me
Thinking about you...
Thinking about me...
Thinking about you.....
Thinking about,
Just you and me, la da de de, there ain't no place I'd rather be
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da

Definitely Counting the Beat. A New Zealand band.

That's it.  Thanks for your help.

Amazingly, this song did not chart in the Top 100 in either the U.S. or England.  I have 2 books that list all the songs that hit the Top 100 in both countries from 1955 thru 1991 and this song wasn't in either book.  Apparently it only charted in Australia and New Zealand.

That IS strange. I would count it as a classic song form the 80's. I really enjoyed listening to it again when you asked the question a few days ago.

Lots of bands only have hits in their home country.  It's always nice to learn about bands in other countries :)
