Subject: What was a seedier time - the 1980s or 1990s?

Written By: Tiramisu on 03/06/09 at 5:36 am

1980s ... cold war, drug violence, AIDS starts, racial tension in cities, "greed is good"
1990s ... school shootings, precursors of iraq war, rise of terrorism, cultural obscenity

1980's =  mtv music videos, new wave music, great movies, great clothing including the return of the "mini"

1990's= rap, grunge, violent video games, crappy movies, cell phones....................
seems kinda obvious to me which was and still is the better decade!

I would say the 80s were seedier since the economy wasn't booming like the 90s and people were able to get away with more.  Think of how (pre-gentrification) Manhattan was in the early 80s - dirty, nasty, seedy.

Yeah, it wasn't until the late 80s when the economy was slowly but surely picking up again.  I think that the late 80s and 90s were the most prosperous in my lifetime.  I was in kindergarten in the early 80s.  Thank God.

The 80s certainly seemed grittier. The 90s had a more clean cut type of trouble.

I would say that the 90's were by far the seedier.

The early 1980's were more an extension of the late 1970's.  And it took a while to recover from the tripple digit gas prices, double digit inflation and double digit unemployment.

By the mid 1980's, things were actually going pretty good for most people.  It was the affluence and prosperity that allowed the "Yuppie Generation" to come into it's own.  $30k cars, $250k homes, enough gold jewelry to choke a camel with.  The consumer economy was in full swing, with $20 a day makeup for the gals and $200 pastel outfits being all the rage.

But with the recession of the early 1990's, things came to a quick crash.  Along with that you had things like Urban Flight, rise in gang membership, "tagging", and a lower feeling of worth in things.

I left LA in 1987, and returned in 1993.  I could not believe the difference I saw in just 6 years.  The town looked a lot dirtier, nasty, and ugly.  Grafitti went from an occasional gang sign (which most washed off or covered up) to covering any surface that sat still for more then 30 seconds.  Businesses and homeowners largely stopped fighting it, as well as doing things like picking up trash or washing down the sidewalks.  It was easy to see that a "who gives a damn" attitude had largely taken it's place.

I think the movie "The Principal" with Jim Belushi showed the darker side of the 80s(albiet in a hilarious matter).

I definitely remember how New York City was like in the early 80s it brings to mind Times Square. I can remember as a kid the X-rated movie theatres and sex shops, prostitutes, and the petty hustlers looking to rob the next tourist. Disney certainly did a great job cleaning up the property by the late 80s. Its hard to believe there was a time you couldnt walk with your family after a certain time because it was considered dangerous.

Remember the "Love is a Battlefield" video by Pat Benetar? well she filmed some of the video on the actual streets  near Times Square which captured the seediness of 80s NYC. Think about it,- that vidieo (about a runaway who becomes a prostitue) would not have been filmed on Times Square today. (not seedy enough)

I also think the crack epidermic in the inner cities made those areas unimaginable. The so-called 'crackhouses' that was forming in abandoned buildings it made you wonder why would people want to live in such squalor.
